crystalworks is on a distinguished road
Ah that was a nice mental break from this thread. Checking back in and catching up on what I missed.

Very cool OB, glad you're "back in the saddle" again.

I'm with you on the continued lockdown and printing more money being extremely damaging to the country. Sending formerly working Americans onto the dole being a bad precedent to set. Especially if you are going to incentivize it by paying more than their salaries. Instead of expanding unemployment federally, I'd have preferred to see more payments to working Americans as well like the $1200 payments. With the amount of money thrown at different programs in the economic recovery bill $1000/mo for 10 months (using napkin math, numbers could be slightly different) would have been an easy thing to do and probably would have benefited more than all the red-tape laced SBA loans and PPP program which are going to be rife with fraud, defaults, etc. Using this method, another stimulus bill would not be needed, many more mortgages/rent would get paid, groceries would get bought, etc using the same amount of money over a much greater period of time.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on the masks though. The chart Maruzo posted is very helpful. You're right that it does not block all incoming particles but it blocks enough (especially from being expelled by the wearer) to have a hugely significant effect on transmission.

I don't refer to myself that way, but I don't care if someone else does. Call me Mexican, German, Czech, etc. Doesn't phase me other than maybe raising an eyebrow. Certainly wouldn't raise my blood temperature. Focusing on the name of the virus is distracting from working on how to deal with it. People have gotten over it and, in general, have settled on calling it Covid-19 or the coronavirus. I typically call it, the rona. EOD calls it the kung flu, not going to ruffle my feathers. To quote Rodney, "What's in a name?"

I also agree with you (as I said way back in the thread) that quicker action would have been nice. US manufacturing (lack of), tariffs, China stocking up on PPP and limiting exports, etc all contributed. But comparing the US to countries with much different populations, densities, customs, etc is also not going to be very helpful. First, the reported numbers we have are, most likely, wildly inaccurate from most (if not all) countries. Second, our land mass and population densities vary greatly compared to most countries.

I agree. Thank you redliner.

Thank you for posting that graphic. I think back on page one or page two I said I thought the WHO, CDC, and gov't would be judged harshly by history for stating masks or face coverings should not be worn. I know why they did it, to protect limited supply for health care system. But would have respected them for saying as much rather than lying outright to the country saying they are ineffectual.

I am operating under the assumption EVERYONE has the virus and am cleaning most things I touch, am very careful how I touch them, and wash/sanitize my hands (usually only one hand touches a public object/surface) before touching anything. My wife works from home. We have our groceries delivered. Leave mail and packages on a "decontamination cart" in the garage for 2-3 days. And we only really travel to and from my parent's house. I've been to a grocery store once in the last 60 days. We wear masks when outside in public areas.

I consider our strategy fairly extreme, but we want (especially our children) to be part of the 20-40% of the population that does not get infected over the next 12-18 months. I don't pretend that everyone in the country has the luxury to stay home, or desire to frankly, and don't expect everyone to do what we are doing. People can live their lives the way they see fit. We cancelled a Mother's Day BBQ because my Mom went to a restaurant. Told her, "see you in 14 days." Meanwhile our neighbors across the street had 20-30 people over. Did we call in a complaint or get pissed? No, that's there right.
