Sirius in 02 x5, cd player hw/sw rev question

I bought an "updated" cd player from a salvage yard to complete my sirius install. My cd player says "sv50-0142" when you check the rev as detailed in one of the faqs. I understand it needs to say svxxxx50 or higher. THe new drive I bought says it was made in 00 on the bottom , the part # doesn't match, (they sent me the wrong one from what I ordered) but....it says this on the bottom:

cd53 e39/53

65.12-6 908 783

SW/NO. 50
HW/NO. 48

KW: 47/00

Manufactured 00 november 1w.

So, it appears that it has the right sw revision even though it's sig. older...is this possible? They salvage yard is looking for the part they really sold me but if this would work I'd just keep it and use it instead.

UPDATE: I installed this unit to check the sv # when you power it on, it is SV-4700 50. SO, again from looking at it from this angle it seems as though it has the correct firmware. Is that possible? The part # is older than the one in my car now...so, there must have been a stop in FW revisions at some point and then they restarted? For point of reference my old unit said "sv50-0142 when I checked it.

Thanks for any help.

Joe Clark

I tend not to go by the stickers - the best thing would be to connect the radio and view the Software version on the head unit itself.

1. Turn Radio Off.
2. Turn Radio On.
3. Press and hold the "m" button for about 10 seconds.
4. Press < or > to navigate, you will need to go to the 2nd screen to look for the SW Verison which is in a SV xx-xx xx format.
5. To be Sirius/AUX or XM compatible, the radio must be SW 50 or higher.
6. Turn radio off to exit.

Contact me directly if you need additional help on the phone, I'd be glad to assist.

Tom,

As stated in my "update"

"UPDATE: I installed this unit to check the sv # when you power it on, it is SV-4700 50. SO, again from looking at it from this angle it seems as though it has the correct firmware. Is that possible? So, is it possible that a cd player from the end of '00 would be compatible while my orig one from the end of 01 is not? The SW revisions say it is, but I find that hard to believe. Thanks for any additional info.

It's possible as BMW sells the radios refurbished at the part counter. The best way to verify would be to connect the Sirius receiver and see if its recognized.

Tom, I have a 2002 X5 with a nav system. The "code" on my stereo is: SW3-1/50.

What will it take for me to get Sirius with text display on the nav screen?

BTW.. I got the code off of the "Settings" screen in the upper right hand corner.

The radio tuner should be ok, you are right on the borderline.

You will also need a MKIV (DVD-based) Nav computer in order to be compatible with Sirius. These can be purchased from us or used on eBay if you can locate one.

Let me know if you should have any further questions.

Tom, Thank you for the reply! Why is the MKIV required to have the sat radio with display?

Sirius is handled much differently in a NAV environment that requires the MKIV computer. We've tried every configuration possible for MKIII, it's simply not compatible with Sirius.
