16:9 monitor: tape2dvd conversion & HDD player integration

Ever thought how cool it yould be to have a DVD video drive behind the 16:9 on-board-monitor ?

I can tell you: that's really cool !

... even if it was really hard work.

But: because the radio gets an error from the tape deck (sure! it doesn't exist any more) the motorized open/close function will not work any more.
I had to build a small module with a Microprocessor, listening for the iBus message when you press the open/close button to drive the motor.
(without end-position detection - just by time)

It's already some time ago I did this.

I used a generic DIN DVD Player from eBay. I had to completely reconstruct the monitor housing (e.g. lowering the screen circuit board)
Now, I would use one of mini DVD-Player.

Nice work! How's the reliability been? Does it fire up and play when you turn it on every time?

Very cool implementation for easy use

It's now about 2 years in my car and still works :-)

I made a small hole inside the bottom switch line of the middle console.
(where the ASC, seat heating buttons,... are) and put the remote IR-eye there

That is very cool. Do you have any pics of it inside your car?

It's a fully functional DVD-Player, connected to the TV-Tuner.

If you mean with "out of the box" that you can watch a DVD on the BMW monitor without the rest of the equippment (nav unit, TV-Tuner,...): NO
This would not be hard to realize but I would not see any sense in it, as it would only cost a lot and the only thing you could do is to watch DVDs,

This is a very interesting setup. I am quite curious whether you are able to display operational information (OSD) from the player on the bordmonitor.

I am not sure if all understood what I did.

I mounted a car dvd-player into the onbord-monitor housing. Thats just the place where I put it.
It's not wired with the BMW monitor in any way.
Thick and good shielded AV cables run back through the car into the trunk where they are connected to the TV-Tuner.

So, in DVD mode, I have the same user interface, menus, OSD, ...etc like a DVD-player connected to a television at home.
