Exclamation SES Light on again... Now what can it be? *UPDATED 07-23-07*

Well I had the SES light come on about two weeks ago with the following codes:
P1341 - Multiple cylinder misfire with fuel cut-off
P1351 - Misfire cylinder 5 with fuel cut-off
P1353 - Misfire cylinder 6 with fuel cut-off
P1349 - Misfire cylinder 4 with fuel cut-off
P1354 - Misfire during start cylinder 7
P1345 - Misfire cylinder 2 with fuel cut-off

My shop did a smoke test and diagnosed as leaking intake gaskets and valve cover gaskets, while they were there they did the valley pan.

The morning immediately after the repair I got the SES light back with:
P1354 - Misfire during start cylinder 7

The shop cleared this and said it could be a clogged injector or fuel pressure situation due to old filter / failing pump.

Now two weeks and 700 miles later the light is back on and I have the following codes:
P1341 - Multiple cylinder misfire with fuel cut-off
P1347 - Misfire cylinder 3 with fuel cut-off
P1345 - Misfire cylinder 2 with fuel cut-off

What else could be causing this? Is there a software update that I need to make it less sensitive?

* This did occur just after getting gas at Costco. Could it be bad gas?
** Note the X runs great and gives no indication of any of these issues.

I am beginning to wonder if it is part of this BMW service bulletin. SIB120302 - dme reprogramming for check engine light. I wish I could find the whole bulletin to read it.

I know everyone is headed out for the 4th, but anyone have any ideas on this one before I bring it back to the shop that did the gaskets?

Try some Shell V-power. It has helped a few others in misfire/knock/ping issues.

Thanks Vinuneuro... I'll give it a shot. Did the others you heard of also get SES lights with knocking / pinging? Just curious as I haven't heard it, but if it is being sensed by the knock sensors I wonder if that spawns the SES.

Hey Von,
I recently had the same problem with those and several other P codes. Like P0171 and P0174. After taking to two different dealers they at first diagnosed the same problems of intake gaskets leaking and valve cover gaskets. A few days later after ploping down close to 2 g's the light came back on. finally diagnosed bad catalytic converters and faulty o2 sensors. after that occured light came back on again and diagnosed again with a bad MAF sensor. so it was just a cycle of bad luck for me. finally everything is done and no more "SES" lights. Thank the bimmer Gods!!

Well I just had the fuel filter replaced to help with the diagnosis. Now I can honestly feel stutter in top gear at part throttle.

The shop tested the fuel pressure and the MAF and apparently they both checked out. It seems like this occurs more at high ambient temperatures, but I could be wrong.

Should I give up on the shop and head to the dealer? Any ideas on the one guys?

UPDATE - As I mentioned last time the fuel filter netted no improvement in the stutter / misfire situation. That said the shop tested the MAF and noted that it was out of scale on one end of the flow spectrum.

With the new MAF the X5 runs well, when temps are below 95F. Once the temps are high and the AC is running at freeway speeds part throttle can induce the stutter / misfires.

The X5 is down at the local dealership and they are stumped as well and are waiting for a really hot day to watch fuel pressure and DME activity.

I am really frustrated. If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it.
