X5 4.8is 02 Sensor not ready?? Can't pass Inspection.

I just bought an 06 X5 4.8is and it currently will not pass inspection because the 02 Sensor reads not ready. The dealer was supposed to inspect it, but they were having the same problem and told me to drive it around for a while and take it somewhere to see if it passes. Well its been 800 miles and still says 02 Sensor not ready.

The dealer took it to BMW to get the A/C repaired and said they probably unplugged the battery and thats why its getting the message. Anybody ever have this problem.

Disconnecting the battery should not result in a bad O2 sensor. Unless you have something in writing it's likely you're going to have to fix the problem yourself. Or, like in the Denver metro area, your state has a requirement the dealer is obligated to repair a vehicle that has failed an emissions test (In Colorado the requirement is the test has to be performed within three business days and you have to notify the dealer within that three business days if it fails). It sounds as if you will not have that option.

Here's what you have to do in order to get the systems all "READY"

General Motors Driving Cycle

(Yes it applies to BMWs as well, all OBD equipped cars have this built into their programming)

Interesting. A few of those I haven't tried. I will try them and retest it.

I don't think it's normal. I had the same problem before. The o2 sensor failed right on inspection. It got replaced. I drove about 100 miles and it's reset.

My o2 sensor did not fail. Its just the ECU is showing it in Not Ready status. I will give the list a try and if not I will take it to my local BMW dealer.

FYI... Just wanted to post that I had to take my X5 into the dealer to get this fixed. Told them it wouldn't pass inspection and they could not figure it out. They had it for about 2 1/2 weeks. Finally their regional technical expert got it worked out. Not sure what they did. But something about Engine Control module and ISTA/D.

While it was in they replaced both folding mirrors and a leaky winshield washer pump. I'm just glad they fixed it. Nice to have the CPO to take care of it. Plus we got to test drive a nice 2011 335d.
