What to do for 100,000 mile service?

I have a 2005 4.4 X5 with 108,000 miles, and would like to know what brand and type fluids, and capacities for transfer case, and front and rear differential. I changed the air filter, coolant, and trans fluid and filter at 89,000 miles, but may change trans fluid again.
Owners manual says to change the spark plugs and O2 sensor. Do people usually change the O2 sensor? I haven't seen anything suggesting a new fuel filter, but would think that should be changed. Anything else?

You can use this as a guide
E53 X5 4.4 Maintenance Service Package - Turner Motorsport

Playing catch up with the maintenance items, tackle them one at time (or hard core/OCD version) - various Fluids and Filters

For the items you ask (if they will fail or set to change at 100k), it's up to you.

The magic crystal ball (to predict when a specific part will fail) - is not existing... Even if you do regular inspection, a part can start to fail slowly or fail eventually the next day (e.g. door carrier, expansion tank, gaskets, ball joints, bushings)

It is a give and take what will you consider a maintenance item, preventive maintenance or wait for it to fail (then remove and replace as it goes)

Good Luck!

What to do for 100,000 mile service?

Trade in the X for a lower mileage and newer model.

Off the top my head what I've been hearing a lot change all the cooling hoses/flush water pump, transmission fluid/flush & filter, obviously oil change , maybe fuel filter and common sense check everything out brakes , drive tran etc.. (I'm sure more seasoned veterans can give you a better run down I'm learning too lol)

Here's my list from a prior posting:

On a regular basis:

> Rotate tires, inspect pads & Rotors, CV boots, general lookover every 5000 miles
> Oil / Filter change every 8000 miles
> Brake fluid flush every 30,000 miles
> Replace belts and clean CCV every 100,000 miles
> Replace differential and transfer case fluid every 100,000 miles
> Replace sparkplugs every 120,000 miles
> Replace expansion tank, coolant and hoses every 150,000 miles
> Replace bake pads every 163,000 miles (Akebono ceramics)
> Replace rotors??? (182,000 miles on current Brembos)

My unplanned repairs have included:

> Front axles at 60,000 miles (Prior owner didn't maintain CV boots)
> FSR at 78,000 miles
> Two sparkplug coils at 124,000 miles
> Alternator at 126,000 miles
> Front driveshaft at 136,000 (used a salvage transfer case for cost savings)
> FSR (again) at 159,000 miles
> Thermostat at 176,000 miles
> Rear differential seal at 200,000 miles
> Secondary air pump at 224,000 miles
> Thermostat (again) at 245,000 miles - at least it was warranty this time
> Steering column double U-Joint shaft at 245,000 miles
> Valve cover gasket at 245,000 miles
> Both fuel tank sending units, fuel pump and canister at 245,000 miles

The "Expected" replacements have been:

> All four window regulators
> Driver door handle carrier
> Front axle outer CV boots (each side one time)
> Front tension struts

All in all, except for the stupid front driveshaft job that cost $4200, I have really been happy with the vehicle. It doesn't get babied, but I do monitor and maintain it. I think a lot of my good fortune is due to four things: I live in Texas with short winters so I don't have a lot of the CCV condensation problems, my daily commute is 60 miles so the engine oil always reaches full operating temperature, I run the "M" series viscosity engine oil from May through September when I my driving includes 3000 miles of towing a 1400 pound Waverunner and trailer, and I stick with Shell gasoline.

Additionally, I don't change the transmission fluid! I'm a firm believer in leaving it alone and simply installing a full re-manufactured transmission if it ever becomes necessary.

Hope that dives you some ideas.

Pretty good list. I think your attention to maintenance, and checking things regularly (not just replacing components) has paid off for you. Also, your driving cycle doesn't just benefit your CCV but also other components which need to get hot and work a little and not just idle around town, to last their design life.

Couple of comments:

1) You appear to have annual mileage around 20,000 or so. Some of the items you have listed depend more on age than mileage, so while the intervals work for you other posters may want to adjust them to similar age intervals. Examples would be cooling system components, and brake fluid flush. Are you doing your coolant more often than 150,000 miles? I use four years, myself.

2) Engine air filter and cabin air filter?

3) Battery?

4) Water pump?

Good service you're getting from it, congratulations.

I'm actually doing 25,000 miles per year. The first owner just put 53,000 on it during his lease. The coolant was only completely changed one prior time at about 100,000 miles when the expansion tank blew. So, I'm now on my second complete flush. Other than that, it's only been topped off as needed like with the thermostat replacements, with BMW coolant. I'm still on the original water pump - no leaks or performance problems.

I have a K&N air filter I clean every 50,000 miles, and I do change the cabin air filter every summer after our wonderful Texas oak tree pollen season is over! The original battery lasted seven years, and I replaced it with the larger V8 size battery from Autozone.

It's interesting you mention coolant at four years though because of the number of radiator replacements I have noticed in other postings. Most of them seem to come from members in northern states which tells me there are probably corrosion concerns from salt exposure, not coolant life issues (as long as you're using the proper coolant). I worked for both a Japanese (Zexel) and a German (Behr) automotive A/C condenser manufacturers and the fin material we used was a specially produced zinc coated aluminum for salt spray resistance. Like I said, I think the fact I'm in Texas has contributed to my good fortune with the vehicle.

I would do oil changes ever 5k miles, rotate tires every 4k, brake fluid every 30k, trans, t-case and differential every 100k (use either our Amsoil fluid or the lifeguard 6 from ZF themselves) coolant every 100k, brakes are something that differ so change em based on how much meat you got. change the belts and CCV at 100k, change the plugs for the NGK iridiums (can also get you those if you need). Also Amsoils P.i. and power foam can help your vehicle run likw new. Put 2 bottles of P.i. about 500 miles before an oil change otherwise only run it every 4k miles. If you got any quetions on products you can PM or reach me on the vendor forums. I would also use our Metal Protector on the undercarriage to prevent rust perforation. It also helps to keep the vehicles clean and waxed.
