clicking when window goes up/down

is this a regulator problem or a motor problem?

I know something stripped out but not sure what.

I kept my old OEM regulator/motor assembly when the motor started failing so if this new issue is the newer aftermarket regulator going bad then I kind of want to just toss the new motor on the oem regulator and see how that does while I try to source a new OEM regulator/motor asssembly.

has anyone tried the motor/regulator asssemblies on rockauto?

seems thats a unicorn though. realOEM doesnt even list a regulator/motor assembly pair. just the regulator and motor separately....

I was going to try to find the old regulator last night and take the motor off to see if the motor's drive gear was plastic but got distracted by having to de-ice the fridges ice maker water supply line lol.

Aftermarket regulator is hit and miss.
Use only BMW genuine regulator. It is not that expensive, about $200 or less.

yeah but is it the regulator or is it the motor thats clicking is what I'm trying to figure out?

if the motor has a plastic drive gear then that could be stripped causing the clicking at the regulator junction. I dont see how a metal cable could make that noise unless the end pieces its attached to are plastic and stripped. I'll know more by the end of this weekend though thats for sure lol.

edit: hmm looking online it looks like the window motor has plastic teeth on it.

pretty sure I'll see those stripped off when I take the door panel off...

Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
Make sure in addition to the Genuine BMW regulator, you use new clips (2) and new nuts on the clips (2) per window, otherwise you're just putting it together with one new part and other parts that are worn and have been updated.
