I just went from 17's to 19's. I now have 255/50/19 in front and 285/45/19 in the rear and I do not have probs with width.

No Tire Xpert, but my opin:
you can probably do option 1 with little trouble, as the rolling dia., etc. are nearly identical, and I would think the newer/larger width tire would fit fine. Option 2 may be more difficult with the rear tire in that larger/wider width, for proper sidewall seating on the rim, as the rim width may be a limiting factor but I really am just guessing on that issue of fitment. Dunno what brand/style tires you currently have and why they don't offer you good "grip" in wet... The optional size(s) should offer a bigger footprint for wet road traction, but I doubt they will do much for you in "off road" situs. What brand do you currently have and what brand(s) are you looking into? A call to TR should offer their opins on your larger tire idea, as to fitment, also. GL, mD

the 275 has a rim width range starting at 7.5", so it will work on the wheel. Biggest issue (?) with the wider rear is the tradeoff between better lateral stability and dry grip vs. less hydroplaning resistance and less deep snow/ice traction (if applicable). If you do any off road, I'm not sure that the wider rears will really help much, and you'll lose the ability to rotate tires for better durability.

Currently I am using Dunlop AT20, on wet surface, they perform really bad! Sometimes I just cannot effectively stop my X5 when it is raining very hard (ABS take in very easily), and when cornering on wet surface, it easily lose gripping and make DSC take in. I am thinking of replacing Michelin Latitude Tour HP tires, is it a good tires? Thanks for help and opinion!

More Rubber needed on 17" OEM wheels
I too am in the research mode for larger 17” tires for my 2003 3.0i. I am going to stick with the same size on all 4 wheels so I can rotate the tires front to back and vis versa.
I want to go from the stock 235x65r17 to at least a 255x65r17 or 255x70r17, but I would go bigger if I can without having the tires rub. I’m also thinking that some spacers on the stock wheels might allow me to go even bigger to eliminate inner fender rub at full lock. Would spacers on the wheels allow a bigger tire as well? I would like to have more sidewall than less as I need to air down for off road conditions and the more sidewall, the better the grip in sandy conditions. Thus the reason I’m considering a 70 series tire…. Also, I’m looking for an all terrain type of tire that is not too aggressive, but more aggressive than an all-season tire. Any help or guidance you folks might have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Rick - keep us updated on your purchase and post any pics when you get them. I have also been considering going to a more off-road tire because my X is used as an SUV, not an SAV. I would love to see how the tires look on the X.
Thanks!!

Will do, but it appears no one has done this yet as I have not received any response to my query. I guess the only way to find this out is to go find a tire dealer who would be willing to mount different size tires to see what the maximum 17" size tire would be.

235/65R17 and 255/60R17 are both 29.0" in diameter, and are the only 17" sizes we guarantee for the 4.4 Sport
