steering judder

BMW X5 D Sport 2003. Current miles 82,000.
I have had this problem for 18 months! Only at around 60mph.
I was told it was the discs (rotors) and as all 4 were below min thickness I replaced all. Problem became WORSE. Found various front suspension bushes were worn etc. Changed ALL and fitted new wheels/ tyres, judder much reduced but it became worse over the next 10,000 miles and I have just had the front suspension rebuilt with new shock absorbers, bushes etc., this has almost eliminated the judder but it is still there under hard breaking from say 80+ mph BUT only from 65 down to 50mph.

A disc judder would be at any speed although worse as the frequency hits the spring’s natural frequency or so I have been told by BMW GmbH.

At its worst the steering wheel is almost torn out of one’s hands.

I have also had the rear suspension checked and can find nothing untoward!

ANY IDEAS would be welcome

Peter.

Vibration problems

The first thing that most people look for is warped rotors... A common issue that seems to happen around 80k is that the control arms begin to wear out. I also noticed popping and cracking during slow manuvers ie; moving over speed bumps and slow turns into my driveway. What's worse is everything became exaggerated when I went to 20" wheels. I replaced my control arms at 85k and this eliminated all problems. Now it drives like new again.

I was having the same issue , see if one of the front rotors is getting HOT , I mean really hot , one more than the other , I had a dragging caliper and it was causing a front end vibration. Also the brake dust may be more on the side with the dragging caliper … dealer replaced under CPO and then the same thing happened 2 moths later on the other side.

Im coming from Porsche 911 world.... usually, there is no such thing as warped rotors. What you guys are experiencing is brake pad material that is embedded on your rotors. Every time you step on the brakes, it begins to shudder because of the patch of brake material on the disc that is in contact with your brake pad. This usually happens when you keep your foot on the brakes when your rotors are hot and it the pad material melts on your rotor. You need to what is called bedding your brake pads.

To get rid of the brake material on your rotors you have to do drive up to 50-60 mph and stomp on your brakes down to like 5-10mph, do not stop!. If you stop, you will only deposit more brake material on your rotors. Do this about 5/6 times one after the other to get the rotors heated up. This will clean any deposits that are on your rotors and brakes.... the key is to keep the wheels rolling after the power braking session. Give it a try and report back here. GL!
