Wide tires gas mileage?

So I have a 2001 x5 3.0i. It's a very standard model with the 17 inch rims. I had a 2000 Mercedes ML55 AMG previously. I loved the stance on that car, hated the gas mileage and ride feel.

So my question is, for those that installed bigger rims, did you find the gas mileage drop much. I was thinking of going to a 20 inch wheel oem rims if they fit.

Thoughts?

Not even quasi scientific: I went from 18" style 69 rims to 19" style 132s on our 2001 3.0. This was in March 2005, so I had 3 1/2 yrs of the previous 18 vs the new, much bigger, wider 19s. I keep decent track of mpg via fill ups/arith, esp on trips, and I can't recall any considerable or noticeable mpg diff.

However, when I replaced the tires on those 19s, (they had B'stone Turanzas orig on the wheel), and went with Diamaris, I noticed a slight drop in mpg, esp. on trips. The Diamaris tread is much more 'all season-like', and was a mistake buy, imo...

All fwiw, and not 17s vs 20s...I would suspect you will see some slight drop in mpg, not due so much to 'footprint', but to higher weight, larger spinning mass to get moving, and keep moving, etc.
My 50Cts. GL, mD

PS: style 87 is in 20, and they will fit...fabulous looking wheel, imo.

These might be up your alley.... contemplated buying them several times but have other priorities at the moment.

Those are hot!! But I have two friends that have staggard tires and all I hear are complaints. They look hot, but don't last long.
