Secondly, lets not start the whole "Why diesels" debate again. Diesels have a much farther range on a tank of diesel. They have more useable power in day-to-day driving. And even if you feel like thrashing the car all day, you'll still get respectable fuel consumption numbers.............unlike petrol. Thrash an X5 3.0si for a few hours non stop and then tell me if you can get better than 9 miles to the gallon.
Well, I didn't use EPA numbers, I used UK numbers and Canadian government test standard numbers. I like them more than the EPA figures.

Not sure what the relevance of the X5 thrashing is, as the thread is about a 3 series.

Now, if they gave us the 320d instead of the 335d, there would be a reason to be interested. I don't see the point of the 335d, given the lacklustre performance and middling fuel economy.

I can only report on a 535i, which weighs about 50 kg more than a 335 last time I checked.

I get 12.4 litre/100 km, thrashing it around town. That equates to 23 mpg, or 19 mpg for the US gallon. Driving conservatively around town, shifting at 1500 when possible, skipping 2nd gear half the time (because you can), I can get 12.0 litre/100 km. That equates to 24 mpg, or 20 mpg for the US gallon. The fuel consumption is simply not sensitive to being driven hard or not, at least for me in city stop/start driving.

On the highway, the mileage is much better, but I don't get it out on the highway much.

Your 7 mpg estimate is not even close, given that I have a slightly larger/heavier car with the same engine/transmission combination.

I meant thrashing it, like on a track and nothing else. For example at the Ultimate Driving Event, the X5 4.8i got 6 US mpg (40l/100km).

The instant fuel consumption in petrol vehicles can be shocking. Kickdown the 325i at 60km/h, and fuel consumption jumps to 62-67l/100km.

That would be relevant .......if I lived on a race track and drove it like I stole it everyday, but I don't.
