I'm going back for another test drive tomorrow so I'll try and report back then.

I didn't mean the exhaust wasn't loud but I was talking about the sound/tone. I'm fine with the loudness but I guess I was expecting more of a deep V8 rumble. Compared to other V8s like AMG 63, it's a joke.

The truck will never have a rumble/tone like the 4.8is or AMG 63 engine because its a smaller V8 and because its turbocharged. The turbo will naturally baffle/camber the rumble upon start up and throttle blips.
Also remember that the exhaust has flaps so you need to put it in M mode for the full effect.

Oh, I'll have to try it out tomorrow. I didn't find M mode today until I was done with the test drive. Do you think there would be a difference in acceleration at WOT in M mode vs not being in M mode?

Yes it should feel very different and much more aggressive/responsive.
That 50 page model summary (in the press release thread) explains the differences as well.

I would assume it may be similar to the difference in D vs SD mode in the 4.6/4.8is...i suggest checking out some of the reviews.

Sport mode on the 4.6 and 4.8is only changes the tranmission shift maps and throttle response.

The M mode on the X ///M changes the rear height, transmission maps, exhaust note, throttle response, steering response, suspension calibration, rear diff bias, etc...

Page 1 of the press release thread actually onlines everything thats modified when pressing the M button (too many to list here).

Top Gear needs to do a segment on this beast... good or bad.

I am used to sport seats...have it in all my BMWs so I do not mind them at all. I did not play much with X5 M seats but the BMW comfort-sport seats which cuddle you and open up when you put in park are the best seats from BMW.

I drove a carbon black, black interior with piano black trim. Piano black trim is standard.

Likes:
  • Like the power and 0-60. Don't think it even needs mention.
  • Brake are awesome.
  • Transmission is good
  • Pedal shifters do a good job.
  • iDrive is A+. They finally got it.
  • M mode is great. I drove in M Mode from get go.

Dislikes:
  • Hate the wheels, they look like X3 wheels
  • I did not find pedal responses as quick as 4.8is. The 4.8is leaps like a cheetah the moment you step on it. May be I need to play more with it.
  • Exhaust at idle is worse than my 4.8is. Even when you gas the pedal on park the 4.8is sounds better. On the highway though, when you push to metal, that's when the X5 M exhaust is getting everyone's attention.

I think its in different league from 4.8is. For lack of better words; 4.8is feels like raw untamed power, and X5 M is refined and tamed power.
