Let me be clear.. It's not that I don't think the X5M is great looking, it is. It's just pedestrian. The aggressive lines that the e53 had are gone and even the new wheels scream "soccer mom"..

If it weren't for what was under the hood and it's handling capabilities, and the fact that it's the most badass SUV on the planet, I probably wouldn't get it for looks alone. Check that, the looks of the X5M is the biggest thing it has going against it. I like the looks but it certainly is not the best looking car BMW has ever made. It's not even the best looking SUV BMW has ever made.

The X6M on the other hand.. While I have mixed feelings about it's looks on paper, every time I see one drive by I'm a little awe struck.. I'm like, "wow, that's a pretty sharp looking vehicle.."

So while it doesn't do much for me in theory, it does do a lot for me in practice.

But then there is the question asked by L, "How often do I need 5 seats?" The answer is, not all that often.. But when I do need 5 seats, I do need 5 seats.

And I don't want to be a back seat passenger in somebody else's car because I didn't have enough room in my vehicle to accommodate the bigger party. And that's what happens when you give up a seat, you start being a passenger in other people's cars and I'd rather be the driver.

Also, cargo room? I thought they were about the same size? No?

Lets be honest, it's a better looking vehicle. Wheels are better and I understand it handles better also.

I don't have kids but am worried about giving up that 5th seat..

Am I crazy for even thinking about asking my salesman if he could switch my order?

Please, talk me out of it...
If you think the X6///M is the better looking vehicle, who are we (who is anyone) to talk you out of it? I say go for it! It's only $2 or $3K more.

Keep in mind though: if you prefer the X6 body, the new X6 50i TT gives you a 440-hp option, and you can get it right now (today) for a cool $10-$15K less than the X6///M. The performance hit in "downgrading" is not as bad as it is for X5///M "droolers" (like myself). You're still in a screaming-fast machine with a X6 50i TT. With the X5 non-M, you're stepping down by 200 hp, and almost 2 seconds on the 0-to-60 mph department.

Hey B-Line, I share your thoughts! Coming from the E70 I was really thrilled to hear about the M-version - but when the X6 appeared, I was completely smitten by it. Yes, only 4 seats/cargo area smaller/slightly lower - but it is a fresh twist on a very popular design. I ordered a X5M but changed to the X6M - looking forward to a "fresh face" - the X5 is starting to age IMO.
Carbon black/grey/piano black.....oh boy.........

Cheers,

Every now and then, manufacturers create a fad and while it may be hot when it comes out, nobody could care less about it in a couple of years. It belongs in the same category as the Infiniti FX. If you don't need the cargo space and you don't have kids, then why get somethng that looks like a big beefed up car that's jacked up! Get an M5 instead. Otherwise stick with something that's going to be a classic SUV/SAV and one that will smoke the pants of any other...including the Porshe Potato Turbo

And while you're at it, get custom plates that say PRSHETR!
Ditto, go with X5M ! Not to mention it will probably hold better resale value down the road than X6M...

And X6 has less cargo room...

And the 5th seat... Dont forget the "utility" factor.

Last thing... once you get X5M at your door, you will forget about this "decision"...

X6M is nice looking, but Meiac can't ride in the back seat. And Meiac isn't that tall...

An X6 is more 2 + 2 kids seating anyhow, not due to legroom, but that the rear passengers will be hunched over. X5 also has the big moonroof which is a huge ++ imo.

Because he doesn't like it. The resale value down the road doesn't matter anyway. Just one of the joys of leasing. The residuals must be close for both X5M and X6M, if not the same.
