I've got 4 out of your list - 12.000 km
I absolutely love the car, however hate the way it has been put together, I have to say that BMW quality has gone down unfortunately.

This is the car I got when BMWNA bought back my 2008 4.8 for problems that could not be repaired. I love it but just wonder what is coming next? I have the whine and the brake squeal but none of the other items. Headlight recall doesnt bother me I'm just not going to let them do it.

I long for the days of my 2006 4.4. That thing was a tank. The question is if you get rid of this M what is there to get? I went the Cayenne route with a 2008 GTS and that was a disaster. Nothing at MB is of interest which leaves really a 4runner/GX460 or LX570/Landcruiser.

So, the belt tensioner things didn't do it? Hmm, yeah the foreman at my dealer said they've had a similar problem on a 7 series, that's why they thought it's the oil pump. I still don't have my car back because I'm having the dealer install the roof rails. I ordered the car with them and somewhere along the way it fell off the order. So, when I purchased the car, I told them they are going to have to take care of it. I figured I would get it done now while I have the loaner and my car is there. That's why it's taking extra time for me to get my car back.

E53is: wow sorry to hear about your transmission problems. I have about 9500 miles on mine and haven't had any transmission issues. It seems rock solid. I didn't even mention the light recall when I dropped the car off. I think it looks more "stealth" at night without that ugly orange light shining to the side. If they do it, then that's fine, if not, I'm ok with that too. My cd/dvd changer is fine, but I don't use it much. They lubed up the passenger doors so the creaking has been gone for a while. I'm guessing they don't have lemon laws where you live?

Honestly, I don't expect BMWs to be perfect nor even close. The 2003 4.6is I had prior to this car had more than its fair share of issues. So, maybe I'm just used to it by now but I think the X5M has been great so far.

i dont care about the front light either and aslo like the look but its another trip to dealer i dont want to do, a few more days i dont drive it.. ( i told them not to do that part.)

i love the car too and honestly dont really want any other car but i need one that works. when i said Porsche i didnt mean the cayenne,i dislike the new look a lot,i meant a 911 turbo s or gt rs. the quality of the M is far less than what i had expected. even the rubber line that runs along the windows is straight but of in places...disappointing

the reason i still have the car is that my dealer has hinted about replacing the car with a 2011 M

If they will replace it through BMWNA then thats the route to go. When BMWNA bought my'08 back they were extremely fair in the process but the question is will the new one be any better. It would be interesting to see if anyone here has a 2011 and if they are hearing this sound?

Arrow

thats an interesting question,idk myself.

mswaz, how did you start the process of sending your 08' back?

update-

* 6 disk cd/dvd player stopped working - the unit did fail, bmw is replacing it.
* the inner trim is falling off around the start button. bmw replaced the part
* rear brake sound - bmw is sending a special set of brakes that wont make the sound. i was told they are well aware of the problem and have solved it.
* creaking passenger doors. still working on it, they tried tape but it didnt work.
* recall for front lights left as is
* horrible sound "whine" at idle/low rpm. they replaced the parts listed on this site, the sound is gone*. thanks guys.
* transmission failure (4x) the car needs to be reprogrammed but also needs a working cd player to do so..
* needs to be repainted. (paint chip problem) no real acceptable solution

+ all parts that were replaced by bmw were shipped over nite.

my fingers are crossed for a 2011 M. ( i dont hope though. ) i have lost faith in the current vehicle, losing power in the middle of detroit at 2am has left a very bad taste with me.
if i didnt like the car so much i wouldnt have even tried to fix it...

only time will tell...

Good luck, E53is... I hope they replace that lemon for you. You shouldn't have to worry about the transmission on this car.

I wanted to give an update. I picked up my car today, didn't get the roof rails installed yet because they are still waiting for approval from BMW.

Anyhow, here's the description of the repair they did. "Engine oil pump mechanical failure check function of engine, interrogate fault memory, no relevant faults stored. Connect oil pressure gauge and check engine oil pressure, idle: 2.2bar/4.5 bar while driving. Found noise coming from engine oil pump internals. R&I uppder and lower oil pans and replace engine oil pump."

So, there you have it. The noise is gone for me too. We'll see if it comes back or not eventually. It looks like they replaced the oil when they replaced the oil pump. =)

Oh, you had them installed after delivery too? Were they trying not to give them to you? I guess the sales manager was on vacation last week so didn't make any progress in getting them. He said BMWNA messed up the order and is trying to get them to pay for it. Regardless, it's on the "due bill" when I purchased the car that they owe me roof rails, so I don't care whose dime it's on. My service advisor is gonna stay on top of it and let me know when everything is ready for installation.
Do you know what was involved in the installation? I read that they have to remove the inside headliner which has me a bit worried.

wow, same thing happened to me. they stalled and lied but like you i had it on paper as ordered. the reason is it cost my dealer 1400$ to install it.
it took the whole day and was a lot of their hours. they did have to take out the headliner, also there is a strip the rails attach to that have to be body color painted too.

i was told bmw stopped making the rails, they dont even come with them, just about everything until i found another x5m at another bmw dealership, took a photo of it (it had rails) showed them and they finally agreed to do it. on the same hand, my salesman was fired over the handling of my car.
