i just raced the new jeep srt last night. it had a M plate and was dark grey. the guy was a real jerk, he flew past me and then hit the brakes hard, so i tried to go around him and he then turned into my direction. the light ahead turned yellow so we lined up and he puts his window down to yell " you dont want this and laughed."then his girl gave me the bird out of the blue which changed my mood, my 10min trip just to buy tea turned into race. i walked it twice from a light and from about 30mph. at first he did the "vette thing" where you start to get along side and they take off too soon over and over. after he lost i got the bird again and he did a u-turn. i wanted to just ask him about the truck but he wasnt that type. i dont think you need an M to beat this jeep. it was honestly far slower than i ever imagined. it looked okay and was a lot bigger than i thought it would be. overall, neat truck but srt people please stop talking about these trucks..

I laughed... fun to serve some humble pie, eh?

Always a bigger fish though... (6.4L, ugh.) Good friend of mine owns a shop here in Chesapeake, VA with 424xLC^2 dynojet. Current dyno record is a 1249awhp (through the auto!) JCGSRT-8 built and owned by a transmission parts designer from NC.

take anything from stock & it becomes a money game from there. i cant see the link. (not a member) but i agree with bigger fish, theres always something ha

i just read this and thought it was fitting...

"The good stuff happens when you leg the throttle and toggle the too-small left shift paddle to drop a gear or three. The Hemi hurtles the SRT8 forward like a shot put. The run to 60 should take 4.8 seconds while the quarter-mile blitz will last about 13.5. It’s a touch slower than the ’10 SRT8 we tested but still quick enough to beat top-dog SUVs from Acura, Audi, Cadillac, Infiniti, Lexus, Lincoln, Land Rover, and Mercedes-Benz. (Note to self: Steer clear of the twin-turbo kings, BMW and Porsche, at stoplights.) The wind calls a halt to the fun at a felonious 157 mph. " -car and driver

Oy. I'll have to keep my eyes open... would be a driver's race. If stock.

I personally liked the Jeep SRT.
It was one of the choices prior to the X5 M.

For less then I spent on the BMW, I would have bought a SRT. Dropped it off and had a BES 426 stroker long block, added a cog driven Vortech S/C. Heavily modded the trans including converter. Added suspension upgrades, diff upgrades, exhaust updates and still be under what the X5 M cost. and I am sure it would be faster. But as far as drive quality?? The Jeep will never be a BMW
in drag race, it would not be much of a race. The jeep would be much faster.
Look at this one!!!!

Good to know...I was just wondering about this yesterday. Autoblog had a first drive and they indicated they thought the SRT would match the M in performance, but they didn't actually do any instrumented tests or run the cars side by side. I had my doubts, especially given the added weight of the new version. It is at least 400 lbs heavier than the outgoing model, so despite the 50 added HP, the power-to-weight ratio is about the same as the last version and still much worse than the M. Both can be modified, although I doubt too many people will tear into the new engines on the SRT for street use...maybe tuners using it as a marketing car, but most of the ones you will see on the street will be stock or have light mods at best.

Straight line performance.... hmmm.

I used to mod my vehicles. It is a never ending money pit, because every modification you make, causes some other weak link to break. And so it goes, on and on and on. And you're on your own, because the warranty is void. After a while, you have an outdated unreliable car that forces you to buy a crappier daily driver, because your supremely modified vehicle is no longer a suitable choice for everyday use. Trust me, been there, done that over and over again. The X5 M already has stupendous performance, and when something better comes along, simply trade it in for a new one. Easy. And no lost $$$ from NRE charges (non refundable engineering charges, from the "shop" that is learning about your vehicle at the expense of your pocket book).

I do like the look of the new Jeep SRT8. I think they moved in the right direction, made it more comfortable, and took the edge off. I always felt that I was on the edge of disaster in my '06 SRT8.

Interesting quote from the article...

"The WK [Grand Cherokee] is a better-handling car than the X5 M. The Grand Cherokee — because it's an SRT product — can have its stability control fully defeated, which gives it a significant handling advantage." Also, he adds, "We've got more low-end torque. The WK will whip the X5 M through a slalom or in an autocross."
