When I hit the BC on the turn signal. It always says 12.5 MPG. It said this before the tune and it still says it. On the Trip Computer it says 11.9
that is pretty bad. My 2010 QX56 used to get 11mpg. 9 MPG towing. But it went up to 13-14 with the BullydogTriple tuner
my E gets 17mpg average. It has been in the mid twenties on highway drives.

I ordered the K&N filters. 72.99 shipped for two.
if there are charcoal filters I will tear them out of there. My E felt smoother on the low end with them removed. It did trigger a soft code for the first few weeks. But light never comes on now. It could have been oil mist on the meter sensor???

Check the mileage by filling the tank and logging gallons and miles. The on-board fuel consumption display accuracy can be affected by a tune.

I am taking a drive down south at the end of the summer. i would like to see how it does on a long highway drive.

I do leave it in normal drive mode all the time. I only move it to Sport or manual when I am a hitting it.

considering the weight
the HP
the AWD
there is no hope of decent gas mileage.
But who buys these trucks with the thought of getting good gas mileage.
That is for the Prius owners.

I just installed the K&N filters. Not sure they add much, but what the heck. You can never have too much horsepower.

I also have an e46 M3. I put an AFE set up on it. Many M3 owners believe the factory air intake is optimized, but at least the AFE sounds good.

True, but you can have too little filtration. But what the heck.

do you really think the K&N will hurt performance??

If it is equal, I am cool with that.

Depends on how you define performance.

With respect to maximum horsepower, I think that there will be very little performance difference with clean filters. Not measurable.

I think that with clogged filters I wouldn't want the K&N ones on there.

I think that the risk of an increased amount of dirt passed through K&N filters into a nice clean engine simply isn't worth it. If airflow is so important, and quality of filtering isn't important, just take them out. You will dust the engine eventually, but you will get maximum performance up until that point.

I think that K&N filters (and other aftermarket 'performance' filters, not just picking on K&N here) exist to suck money out of people who believe their marketing campaigns.

I have to disagree.
I have used K&N in most of my vehicles because I have seen the gains in real world testing. Granted I used AEM in both my QX56s. But that is because I got a great deal on the CAI.

I used them on my Mustangs when they were street cars. and they all picked up. There are many magazine articles that backed this up.
A stock non MAF(speed density) would pick up 1-2 tenths. A MAF stock stang would pick up 2-3 tenths. Over the stock paper element filter. I will spend 35 bucks for 3 tenths anyday!! Dont get me wrong. I know the truck will not be picking up 3 tenths from a filter swap. But saying that K&Ns exist to suck people out of money is a little harsh.

On another note. last night when I shut the truck off, the center of the dash showed a oil can/water underneath???

I looked through the owners manual and there was NO symbol like this.
Today I toggled through the settings and did a oil level check and low and behold, it was down a qt??!!! I picked this truck up with 4k on the clock. Dealer went through vehicle and made sure all fluids were OK. so now, 1k later I burn through a Qt of oil????

I know my AMG drank oil. Infact the dealer would top it off if I was in the area. Or I would just add Mobil 1 when I was not near a dealer. But I did not know the X would need me to stock oil as well.

Anyone else go through oil?

My BMW's never ate any oil. It does depend on how you drive it though.
Also, I am with JCL and filters. If 35$ would get you that much performance with no side effects, why would BMW not invest in one?
