also alot of stock air intakes use crazy restrictions to reduce the noise of the air being sucked in. Air silencers. My QX had two large ones on the intake tube.

I have not ripped the intake apart on the truck yet, but I bet there are necked down areas and/or air baffles and silencers

K&Ns arrived. It was in a large box. I thought they sent me the wrong filter. The box looked like it would hold a large round open element style like for a carb engine???
But it had two fat short filters in it. They do not look like other panel K&Ns I have used in the past. They are thicker just like factory BMW panels filters. I am almost willing to bet these pick up slightly. I just want to see the OE filters that come out to decide.

Kind of a pain in the ass. But no big deal. I did not see any charcoal filters to remove.

The filters that came out were literally new. Maybe the dealer changed them?? So now we can compare apples to apples. New factory filter. to K&N filters. No charcoal filters to alter the test.

and there is NO way the factory filters flow as much as the K&N. i took an air blower at 140psi and blew the K&Ns out. I usually do this to blow out any excess oil. Just incase it mists onto the MAS. K&N claims this is not an issue. But it is something I just do. I was blowing them out and could feel the air going through them on my hand. I took the paper filter and did the same thing and it was noticeably less. Granted this is very un-scientific. It is not a sealed tube, checked with a Superflow Flowbench. But you could feel the difference in air passing through.

On the ride home, it felt slight smoother??? probably in my mind. but I will see with the same road and same amount of gas. i have a full tank now, so hopefully I will get it down fast. It is this week or testing will have to happen when I get back from vacation in mid Sept.

I happen to wake up early and decided to makes some passes.
I get outside and I knew it was not optimal weather.
The humidity was high. My truck was covered with condensation.
The air was misty. I checked local weatherbug on my phone and temp was 59, but humidity was 79%
Once again I do not know the formula for figuring out air quality based on humidity/temp. If anyone does, chime in.
Gas was a tick under full tank
I get out to my spot and what the hell??? Traffic like crazy? Where is everyone going at 5am in the morning? Maybe it was extra traffic from the Barclay's Tournament.

Regardless I was only able to get one pass and that took a long time.
This was the incrementals:

Did the K&N drop ins, pick up some power??? maybe. MPH picked up slightly showing power increase. and ETs all were slightly better.Granted it could be from the slightly cooler temps, but I think the humidity kills that. Plus the gas was higher then all the other runs.

Did the K&N HURT power??? NOPE!

Did the K&N suck in more dirt and dust??? I could careless.

For 73 bucks and 20 minutes of time, I think it was WELL worth it.

Really impressive. The cooler weather probably helped but that is really really quick. The traction off the line really helps everything, but even still the rolling 60-100 time of 5.17 seconds is up there with some of the faster sportscars. I'd like to extrapolate out to see the 60-120 and 60-130 times...probably close to 10 seconds for 60-130.

It was about 4 degrees cooler. and there was more gas in the tank.
I was just concerned the K&N might have hurt performance. and i am pretty sure it did not do that.

The next test will be with high octane
and
then with non run flats before winter.

imagine the performance with race gas, non run flats and cold weather!!!!!
I am making a prediction of [email protected]

I have typically used SAE standard J1349 (Jun 1990 version) to correct to standard conditions when running certified engine tests. Some use of ISO standard 15550 as well. In my case, these were typically witness tests on a test bed. By calculating the correction factors from each day to standard conditions, then comparing the two factors, you will get a relative conversion number. Note that this will only be reasonable over a relatively small temperature and humidity range (as SAE J1349 doesn't work for large correction factors). Also, I used the 1990 version which assumes 85% mechanical efficiency for ancillary drives. There is a later update to SAE J1349 from SAE, but you would need to know the actual parasitic load of the ancillaries, and you won't know that.

Just like with dyno tests, the best bet is to run back to back tests (ie with the OE filter, the K&N filter, and with no filters) to get the conditions as close as possible. If you can't do that, at least you can approximate the atmospheric condition impacts on hp.

Here is a calculator to use:

Engine Tuning Calculator - using dew point

Various calculators, all slightly different, as well as the tech info on the calculations, are shown on the left hand side of the page on that link.
