Considering 2004-2006 vs 2007-2010?
- Looking for a car for my son in college in Lansing Michigan... - Very familiar with BMWs, having owned 1998 528i, 2006 X5 etc. - I am "old-schooled" and prefer the 2004-2006 with old-school mechanical water pump. - I know that the 2007-2010 X3 runs on electric water pump (Pierburg price is $350), and this typically dies at 60K-80K etc. - I don't mind buying a 2007-2010 X3 if water pump is the only problem, b/c I can change it and move on. - Can someone help me with the pros and cons of these models? Any downside buying a 2007-2010?

6 speed N52 powered X3 is the best in my opinion

The post 2007 facelift improved a large range of items to do with suspension hardness and general interior finish quality. The first versions were a bit more plasticky.

Why do you prefer N52 over the M54 ?

Onthefence,
I would stick to the 2006 M54 platform bc I know it well. Another thread on this topic of 2006 vs 2007: https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=901171

I've owned a 2004, 2006, and 2008 M-sport ( all at once) . all were 6 MT. to me the facelift improvements are not worth it and I prefer the stiff ride. the only one a still have is the 2004. at 140k miles still running strong. the extra power of the newer ones is offset my taller gearing. so the extra HP isnt really worth in in addition to more wight. if you want dependability get an 04. (the 06 is softened a bit and has a nice body kit)

Before , sir , buying a used e83 X3 bear in mind that the engines have a lot of problems as they age.Search the forums and youtube before buying one as they are not cheap to repair . Also consider the fact that every 6 to 7000 miles you will need an oil change plus the filter. They are not reliable and they depreciate their value fast.If i were in your shoes please allow me to suggest the Japanese auto makers.I put the link of an X3 2007 3.0 owner and what he has paid.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aue_nKDD2pQ&t=20s

It is known for BMW engines to consume a lot of oil funny guy.Modern cars need to make oil changes every 10000 miles.

Funny because I have only had one problem with my E 83 x3 with 140,000 miles and that is when the radiator overflow cracked Other than that I have had zero problems and now that I use heavy duty mobile one oil in it it does not burn any oil does not even leak
Also my 2004 has a factory oil change interval of 11000 miles. But I change every 5 or 6 thousand it’s cheap insurance
