6mt Transfer case issues
. So I take it to my mechanic and he thinks its a clutch issue or an input shaft issue in the transmission so I leave it with him to let him look at it more. The issue is causing the knocking sound and also when you turn the car off there's a cur-clunk while the engine is slowing to a stop. He calls me and tells me that hes felt the transmission everywhere and that there's no vibration and that he can feel the transfer case thumping alongside the audible knock that started this whole issue. I get him to take the transfer case out and there's about 3/4 inch of metal shavings on the plug and magnet and more in the fluid. I have taken the transfer case and no one will look at it cause they say that there are not rebuild kits out there which is hard to believe. I came across this https://www.autopartswarehouse.com/s...ProductContent that I was thinking may work if it can be used with a manual transmission. I looked at the actuator gear and its a little worn but not anywhere like the ones that I've seen online that have caused a fail. There are no dash lights on except for the check engine light that states that I have a problem with the gas cap. Any one ever heard such crazyness? 124,000 miles. Is the transfer case for the Automatics the same used in the Manual transmissions? |

As far as I can see from looking at realoem.com, the transfer case is the same in the manual and the auto. It does seem that there was a period in 2006 & 2007 that there was a different part number though.
RealOEM.com - Part Search https://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/677...0-27103455137/ Critical as you are probably already aware that the front and rear tyres need to have the same rolling circumference, any discrepancy there will result in the transfer case working overtime. I have read over the years that a loose or incorrectly sealed gas cap can trigger a check engine light, though I have never experienced it personally. Good luck getting it sorted.

Thanks.I ended up getting a rebuilt from tcbmwx5.com and it'll take a while to get to the east coast but hopefully it will make everything right.

I dont use a "BMW" mechanic per say. The guy I use services anything from garbage trucks to hot rods to Luminas. Davis Auto located in between Mt. Airy and Dobson. He works at his own pace so its not a ill drop it off and pick it up in a day or two but I've never mind cause I have a Mini to revert back to driving. Hes not for the faint of heart type that only wants a BMW branded tech to touch their car, not saying that that's wrong just this guy gets it done and I trust him.

^ Thanks...was just curious.
I use a local Waynesville shop where the owner is former BMW tech and I also use German Motorwerks in Asheville, though his shop has become almost dlr pricey, though they do meticulous work. Going on 18 yrs old, and I want to keep it going for a few more. GL, mD

Yeah my guys really only good when I need him to wrench on things. When it comes to problem solving I'm kinda on my own unless it's not electronic. An example is I got a new clutch for a 06 accord changed by him for parts and 100$ but it took three weeks for him to get around to it which beats the hell out of paying 2500 all in at the local "import" auto shop. So it takes a little planning.
