I don't always trust the owner's manual. On the M3 owner's manual, it doesnt mention this 3 mode, but its there. In addition, there are sometimes inconsistencies between years in the owner's manuals. The "3 mode" you talk about isn't mentioned in some years of the 3-series owners' manuals, but its there. I'm pretty sure there are 3 distinct modes on the X3, just that xDrive can't be shut down.

Plus keep in mind, BMW doesn't (can't) encourage shutting all the safety systems down. Or else someone would sue once they wrapped themselves around a tree.

I have no evidence that there are 3 modes. DSC is either on or off. I have held that button for a long time and then tested. DSC was still on.

Just to help my own understanding, I checked both the 2004 and 2005 X3 owner's manuals on the home page, and they confirm there are two modes, not three. Can't comment on the Australian experience.

It has to do with the DSC subsystem our cars ship with. In our case, most X5's (if not all) and all X3's have DSC III, which support DTC.

Since both the X5 & X3 were built upon platforms (E39 & E46 respectively) which originally housed DSC II - there is no visual indication to differentiate DTC & DSC on our cars. However it is there. It's very hard to distinguish that is actually there, but try it in a late E46 or E39 and you'll see it's there...

Newer cars like the E90, E60, E63, etc... have always shipped with DSC III or III+, which all have DTC standard from day one - hence the inclusion of the DTC button (which also makes more sense then a DSC button anyway).

---

And in-case your interested, DSC III+ has the following features over DSC III (which the E53 and 04-06' E83's have):

- brake drying
- brake fade compensation
- hill start assistant
and a couple more I can't think of right now...

That one I would like to have
The "major complain" I have from the 2.0d engine is that it doesn't have enough binary at low revs. It's so easy to let the engine go down on start/stop until one gets used to the clutch

The last "jeep" I had (my father, as a matter of fact), was a Daihatsu, and that beast was able to push huge trucks without any need to accelerate I miss that.

Forgive my confusion, but I still don't get it. You said earlier that there are three modes for the X5 and X3. I haven't seen the third mode on the X5, but let's say it is there. You say above that there is no visual indication to distinguish DTC and DSC. But there is. Push the DSC button once, and the light comes on. DSC is out, but DTC is still there.

The question is around the third mode (no DSC or DTC), not the first two (DSC, then DTC). Is it possible to turn off DTC completely, realizing that the AWD is still active? On the E46, which as you note above is the platform the X3 is built on, it is. The OP got a sense of system shutdown when he tried. You make the point that they are built on the same platform. If so, why don't they act the same? What is the connection?
