The filter is in a canister on the top side of the engine, toward the front, on the driver's side. Looking at your engine compartment you will see it to the right of the valve cover, in front of the intake manifold but behind the radiator. It is next to the power steering fluid reservoir (a smaller round item with a knurled top that) It is a silver metal can with a round black top on it. The top resembles a large nut. If you have a large channel lock pliers you do not need any special tools. To be safe the dealer sells a special tool that fits on the end of your socket wrench and fits the filter canister perfectly (but I have done many oil changes without the special tool).
The filter is an insert. Pull the old one out, drop a new one in. The new filter will comes with an o-ring that you should use.

Try the X5world homepage since the instructions for the X3 are similar (obviously click on the X5 3.0i I think, not the Valvetronic engine)
Or, you can search on Bimmerfest. If its not this site, I know someone did a detailed with pics DIY. |

the socket you'll need to remove the oil filter is 36MM big and expensive but will pay for it's self the first time you use it.
click HOME or X3world (above) scroll down to engine & transmission for the DIY mentioned above ab

Please don't use pliers or vice grips. Spend some money to buy a wrench or socket. ALso, check the size of the hex on the cap. I thought I was using my 1 1/4 inch wrench on mine which translates to 31.75mm. My wrench is a little on the loose side but it works without tearing up the hex. Also, take the time to remove the shield under the car instead of draining the oil through that rediculas hole. A little wind under the car and you'll have a mess all over the floor.

36mm is correct, sorry I thought something different. If you don't have a socket you can use a 1 1/2 inch wrench, that's what I've used in the past but it will be loose. Better to buy the correct tool.

See my earlier post:
http://www.x3world.com/x3-e83-forum/...500-miles.html For the most part follow instructions here: http://xoutpost.com/articles/x5/engin...w-x5-3-0i.html Use 6.6 quarts of oil for the X3. 36 mm socket for the oil filter cover. 17mm socket for the drain plug. This is where I got mine, but local autozone or advance has them: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/36mm-...1907QQtcZphoto |
