RE - Instantaneous Fuel Consumption??

Hi All,

I've been a long time lurker and this is my first post. I am live in Australia, have an 06 X3 Sport 3.0d.

All is cool... but I didn't get the NAV with the CID.

One thing I hate is that the car only shows average fuel consumption on the dashboard.

For those of you who have the NAV and the CID, is it possible to see instantaneous fuel consumption on the CID?

I would install a CID and CID controller head unit just to see the instantaneous fuel consumption... but I get this feeling that it isn't even displayed on the CID...

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Adam

I have NAV and I don't think I can get instant consumption readings. You can reset it to --:-- and then get a read out, then reset it again. IIRC there is Consumption1 and Consumption2, and you can reset both independently.

I have nav, and I don't see it anywhere. Just wondering, though, why would you like to have this feature? It dosen't really serve any real purpose.
Anyways, post up some pics of your ride!

There's no instantaneous consumption reading on the navigation screen. As fln8tive said, you can reset one of the counters and read the average since that moment.

An alternative is to use the hidden menus on the OBC to get the real instantaneous reading. I've tested this OBC stuff on our X3 and it works nicely, but it was tested with the car stopped. I haven't tested the consumption readout to see if it works and how realistic it is.

Yes, you can look at the instantaneous fuel consumption. The catch: you need to know how to access/unlock the expanded OBC.

With the ignition off and key out, push and hold the S/R button in the instrument cluster. At the same time, put the key in and turn the key to position I.

The display should now show "test" instead of the maintenance interval mileage. Now push the S/R button multiple times until you get to submenu 19 (displayed as "19._") When the display shows "off", push the S/R button multiple times again until you get to submenu "4._". You can let go of the S/R button at this point and start up the vehicle.

It shouldn't show any other numbers until you fire up the engine, at which point it shows "300". This is the idle fuel consumption. When you accelerate/decelerate, you'll see the readout in liters/100km. For example "297" = 29.7 l/100km.

There are many other functions you can read. Submenu 7 includes stuff (in this order) like engine coolant temp, outside temp, instant rpm, true speed. Everything is in metric units.

I'm probably the only one here obsessed with the instantaneous fuel consumption. Whenever I use this function, I really try to keep the fuel consumption as low as possible.

@AzNMpower32: I'll join you in the task of producing less pollution in the world and keeping the 2.0 diesel engine drinking as little as possible but I've only tried the OBC stuff while parked and haven't yet taken the car out.

BTW, is 29.7 litres a real reading, or just an example? You have a 2.5l fuel engine, right?

It's an example, but I get that reading sometimes. Because it is "instantaneous", you'll get some very high numbers at low speeds because it really DOES take that much fuel. On flat terrain with 50% throttle, the first second or so acceleration from a dead stop, 1st gear usually uses about 72 liters/100km from my 2.5 liter petrol. But consumption quickly drops afterwards. Highway is around 8 l/100km. Average for me since the last service has been 11.2 l/100km (its another OBC function, menu item 5)

And I'm thinking I'm all bad-ass because I know where the "secret" power outlet under the front passenger knee bolster is...

MINI Cooper shows instant consumption on Nav screen, so may be you saw that or you can get a MINI nav unit.

Hmm... Thanks for the replies guys... The very lazy salesman tod me that it was on the dash before we bought the car. Then when it wasn't there on the dash he told me that if I ordered the NAV option (for like 6k) then I would have it on the screen.

I began to wonder since I saw some pics of one of the guys retrofitting the NAV to their X3 in one of the other threads.

Anyways, I hope these pics of the X3 work... It looks pretty cool...

It's a Silver Grey, Black Interior with the brished alluminium, 3.0d, 6spd Auto, Panorama Roof, Bluetooth, M-Sport Pack with 18" wheels.

I am hoping to retrofit a Premium DSP hi-fi to it.

Does anyone know where I could buy a relatively inexpensive OEM Audio Loom for the X3? I have the part number. My local dealer wants about $1100 for just the loom!!!

Cheers and thanks for the replies...

Adam
