switching from x5 to x3.....
is the bluetooth compatible with any BT phone ? is the MPG better since it's lighter than the 5, if so how much different ? is the navi direct hook up if the car doesn't come with one ? thanks Last edited by khmer_x5; 05-10-2008 at 12:32 PM. |

I seem to be getting slightly better gas mileage in my 2005 X3 (17-25) than in my Mother's 2002 X5, which was running around 15-22 mpg. As I understand it, these have the same 3.0 L I6, so I have got to assume that the difference could be attributed to weight and, likely, the extra gear in the X3. Both are manual transmission vehicles, but hers is a 5spd.
Size-wise, they really do not look very different, but they definitely feel different. While the X5 lacks for nothing in the get up and go category compared with the X3, I definitely noticed it's largeness in parking and negotiation a crowded (offroad-ish) campsite. FWIW: The more I drove the X5, the smaller it seemed to me. Same thing is happening with the X3 (have about 400 miles on her since I got her last week), so everything is proportional I guess. Good luck, D |

Yeah, Mom's pretty hardcore... she bought the X5 as a replacement for her 1988 535is, also a manual, for whcih she still pines.
Before that, she had a Plymouth Reliant K and a Chevy Malibu, both station wagons and both were manual transmission cars. (The Chevy was a bomb!) I will pass on your kudos tomorrow.

The X3 is more nimble and quicker to respond than the heavier, larger X5. The 700lb defecit is noticeable.
Bluetooth became available on all X3s in 2005. Compatability is just like any other BMW I suppose. If you're used to iDrive or the newer BMWs, you may not like the functionality since the X3 still is essentially a E46 in software. The fuel consumption is lighter than the X5, but the difference will depend on how you drive. Around town, I usually get around 19-20 miles to the gallon. I can easily stretch that to 28mpg on the freeway averaging 74mph. I'm not sure about your sat nav question. You can retrofit it if you wish, at a price of course. |
