2008 X3 Engine Noise

I have noticed an engine noise on my 2008 X3 3.0si that sounds very much like a valve tap. It comes and goes, however, and so I have not been able to pinpoint the cause. Is this a common complaint? Should I be concerned?

Yeah, that noise is becoming common on the N52 engine. It is actually caused by internal HVA (hydrolic valve adjusters, which are like hydrolic lifters on an overhead cam motor) bleed down where an air pocket gets in them. There is a bleed procedure that can be done at the dealer, but it is still reoccuring. The final solution is cylinder head replacement which requires PuMA authorization (BMW's email based techline) to do, and only after the bleed procedure is doccumented on a repair order. It is a legnthy repair (I have done quite a few of E90s, E60s, E70s etc.)

There is absolutely no need to worry as it is only a noise complaint and will NOT affect the way the car runs at all, but can be annoying so people usually want it fixed. I would bring this to your SA's attention on your next visit to the dealer to get the ball rolling.

I also have a 2008 e83 3.0si with the same valve noise. Thanks for the great tip.

Dredging up a thread, but my wife had her 2007 X3 taken in for service today and now they are keeping it overnight.

Two minor grips, trim panel flaking etc, all fixed under warranty.

Ticking sound from engine, much like I'm used to hearing from a lifter sticking. I had some concern as I've heard rumors that this could be related to problems with the VANOS, but the SA just called me and said they would be keeping it overnight and replacing the lifters.

He said it was not a concern for failure, but that BMW had redesigned the lifters for a new style which dow not require as much pressure to actuate as the previous style.

I hope this is the case as I don't really have a good feel for this dealer and their service department yet as we just moved here.

My wife is enojying the 2010 E92 328xi she's in for a couple of days though...

Yep, what they are telling you is true. If for some reason the noise isn't fixed with the lifters and comes back, they will replace the whole head. More often than not the lifters fix the issue, but if it needs the head they require a teck help case (PuMA) authorization first.
