Any Experience with X3 Fuel Sender?
2004 X3, 3.0, closing in on 100k miles. Gas gauge is becoming erratic/inaccurate. Sometimes it reads properly, sometimes not. Usually its reading low if its incorrect. I'm guessing fuel level sender. Anyone have any experience with them? Any suggestions on trouble shooting? Haven't looked at the TIS CD yet to see what is involved. Thought I'd ask here first. Thanks! |

Like most BMW's it has a saddle tank with 2 level sending units. It could be that one is not reading correctly and throwing off the readings. When it reads erratically how far off does it read?

Hard to say since I'm never certain how much is in the tank vs the gauge reading. One time it was indicating completely empty and I think there was about 1/2 a tank. It didnt' work in the morning on the way to work (about 20 minute drive) then in the afternoon on the drive home it was working properly.
I'd guesstimate its no more than 1/3 - 1/2 tank off. If it was only a small amount off, I'm not sure I would know it. I'm not certain where the gauge is supposed to read when I've driven 25, 50, 100, 150 miles, after filling up. Also, I can't tell if there is a corrolation between how full the tank is versus the gauges accuracy. Nice clean looking X5 BTW... |

Thanks.
I would definately say one of the 2 sending units is faulty, and how far off the reading is would depend on which sending unit is acting up and how much gas is in that half of the tank at the time. May be worth the price of dealer diagnosis to track down the side at fault, as the GT1 tester can read the amount of fuel in each side of the tank through the kombi module and they can compare that to what is in there. It can also store fault codes in the kombi for the sending units as well.
