what changed? i dont know, it is well understood when servicing a x3 transfercase, the fluid from the factory can be either DEX3 or XDRIVE fluid. If you have never seen the color of xdrive fluid, which i can assume youve never even touched a bottle, the fluid has the color consitatncy of XJ fluid. When draining a transfercase with dirty or old oil the color is usually the same if not darker close to the color of clean engine oil. This indicates the transfer case was filled with Xdrive Fluid, if the color of the fluid is red, then it was pre-filled with DEX3.

Thanks for that killcrap. Good assumption that I haven't used the special xdrive fluid myself. My X3 has 40,000 km/25,000 miles, so I haven't felt the need to change the transfer case fluid yet.

So it appears that while the parts book shows the transfer case has the same part number through those years, the factory used two different fluids and your recommendation is to refill with the same fluid as comes out of it. Seems logical. I would have thought that a tag on the transfer case (similar to a transmission fluid tag) or a serial number lookup at the dealer would have identified the correct fluid, but perhaps that is too optimistic.

There was apparently a BMW SIB in 2007 (I don't have a copy) that advised dealers to drain and replace the fluid to the new long life fluid specification. I would have understood that to mean replacing the Dexron III fluid.

OK, new info.
Are there any god way to drain it compleatly??
I will use the the original BMW oil 83220397244.
Does it matter, to mix the oil??? The rest of the old, and the new?

Remember it is a 2004 in Europe..

Thanks for your time..

Just leave the drain plug open for awhile and let it drain completely.
