Change of oil in VTG

First time in here, I'm from Denmark.
I have a 04 with 90000km, and had a fail code saying.
VTG - 54C6 olverschleiss wert zu gross. German :-)

Have anyone tried this. ?
Are you changing the oil yourself?

This fault code relates to the transfer case fluid. The x-drive transfer case uses a special fluid, not ATF like earlier transfer cases. Best recommendation is to source new fluid from BMW.

The fault code is caused by the clutches in the transfer case that manage the torque split front to rear. I believe that the code is set by the oil being out of spec as measured by clutch engagement times.

Apart from replacing the fluid, you will need to have the computer hooked up to reset the transfer case to remove the fault code light. If you don't have the special tooling available, go to the dealer.

I would be very comfortable changing the fluid myself, but I don't have the computer to reset the codes.

Agreed. The transfer case fluid is dirty and needs to be change. VTG = Verteilungsgetriebe = transfer case. Fault code will need to be erased/reset.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I have looked it up, and it seems that the BMW part number is.

Are the oil changing with the year model? I mean in the X3 from 2004 until now?

Thomas

I don't believe the oil changed. The transfer case didn't.

Thank again.
I will change the oil next week, and again for every 50000 km. Is that correct?

No real need to do it so often. I think 80-100tkm would be sufficient while playing it safe.

2003-2005 xdrive transfer cases came in 2 different fluids, you must drain the fluid to determine if DEXIII or Xdrive Fluid is required. The fault sets when the conductivity of the fluid is at/past the preset threshold.

They both show as the same ATC400 transfer case, with the same part number. What changed internally to require a different fluid? And how would draining the fluid help determine which fluid is required? Wouldn't it be possible to read a tag on the case and get the fluid spec prior to draining it?
