If you follow the instructions here http://www.x3world.com/showarticle-182.html you should be fine. It's a relatively easy installation, and takes about an hour and a half.

I was thinking of doing it in the dash compartment up by the windshield above CD and vents. Anyone done that?

It worked great. I installed the AUX jack in the compartment on the dash. It wasn't hard at all. The best part is that everything can fit in there and close up and you can't see anything. Works great, I highly recommend it.

I did it in the ashtray near the cigarette lighter as suggested in the DIY article. I'm sure your chosen location would probably be a lot easier, as the toughest part of the installation is getting the wire to your intended location while navigating all the wiring, etc. behind the dash. The other thing to consider, though, is how to get power to your mp3 player without unsightly wires from a cigarette lighter charger, etc.

I had mine installed in the glove box. That way I don't always have to have the door to the ashtray open.

I have moved mine from the ashtray to the drinks compartment which is never used. I was fed up of having the ashtray open all the time and now can hide my iPod under the sliding tray except when it's being charged.
I've had to drill a small hole in the 'lobster claw' pen holder but that can be replaced. Best (only) mod I've done so far!

Aux input in centre arm rest
I have today installed my Aux input in the centre armrest.
I picked up the part for £39.95, and fitted it myself in about 1 hour (saving £160 if i had had it fitted) I connected to the back of the stereo as normal and then routed the cable down and behind the ashtray, to the left hand side of the gear lever, and then passed along the centre tunnel to the armrest. I was thinking of drilling and mounting the plate in the storage bin, but it has not been necessary. I wanted to minimise any damage to the fittings and have done the complete install without any holes drilled. I did have to take out bits of the dash and gear lever gator to get access for a draw wire, this was a bit fidderly but it did work. I have then connected a stereo 3.5mm jack to the Aux cable and secured this within the arm rest with a cable tie. The other end of the stereo jack can then plug into my IPod. I chose this route as the IPod can then be used by myself as well as front and rear passengers if they want. It sits nicely in the cup holder. Incidently the proper IPod cable was £120 and does not allow me to choose an album in the normal way and play it. It treats the IPod as a Multi change CD player and can forward through tracks only. It also turns of the Ipod screen so you would not be able to see what is playing. I will not be able to change the IPod tracks on the steering wheel, but i can now use the ipod as normal. I have the IPod video version, so i assume when i learn how it works, i can watch video on the IPod and have sound through the car stereo. Regards DEF |
