Starter Disabled due to P/N

Need some help!

My battery light was on in the dash but the charging system all checked out fine. I was checking the two wire connector on the alternator for broken wires or just a bad connection.

To make a long story short....
I unplugged the connector and put in two small pieces of wire in each tab. One of the tabs had 12volts and the other nothing with the key in the on position. I started the engine with the connector off and still had the dash batery light. Then, SUCH AND IDIOT I dropped the plug and it grounded out both pins to the engine with the key in the on position. Crap! No sparks or anything but I check again, with just one pin inserted at a time, and no more 12 volts. I try to start and nothing. I plug it back into the alternator and nothing. Everything else works like normal that I can tell just doesn't engage the starter.

check with INPA and the EWS is on and it says Starter Disabled due to P/N. Checked all the fuses I figured might be connected to shorting that plug but all seems ok.

When I move the shift lever the lights on the dash do not follow the selector. I don't know if that is normal or possibly related due to the fault. How shorting the connector on the alternator would have anything to do with that?, I don't know.

Now I am dead in the water. I tried everything I can to look up wire diagrams but I cannot get that WDS program to run.

Please, anyone have any ideas?

Tim

I checked some more fuses but find nothing. I would like to know where that plug was getting 12v from and then also where the other wire goes. Again, I touched both together and then to ground so who knows what I fried. Grrrr. I put so much work into this X5 and was really enjoying using it, finally, as my daily driver.

The wires coming out of the alternator plug are solid blue and solid green.

Anyone know where I can find a wire diagram for the alternator circuit?

Bentley manual has wiring diagrams (not much help if you don't have one though).

Did you check the fuse panel in the right rear of the hatch as well as the fusible links in the left side of the spare tire well (towards the passenger compartment)?

WDS BMW Wiring Diagram System - Model Selection

Sounds like a fuse. Good luck. Engine compartment, above glove box or in the trunk. Sorry can't look up the circuit at the moment for you.

Thanks for the reply.

I wish I could get that link to work but I get blocked by Java security and I can't seem to find a way around it.

I have not thoroughly checked the fuses in the back right and next to the spare, I will do that.

Are there fuses under the hood? I opened up the box with the modules and I don't see any fuses in there.

I pray that it is only a fuse.

I just bought the hard cover Bentley manual from Amazon. I will have it Wednesday.

Hmm well I looked it up and it does not appear to be a fused circuit... it goes to pin 19 on the x60003 connector on the DME. The other wire is a ground reference. I would check for continuity, on that circuit and try your spare key to try starting your x5 with. It could be you messed up the key code on the key.....

I hope this helps! Keep us posted.

actually I was just thinking about this a little bit, the error is probably cause by the gear range. The starter will be disabled unless it is in Park or Neutral. If the gear selector does not change the gear status on the dash board you could have a bad range switch or something with that circuit....

that is probably the error "Starter Disabled due to P/N".

Hopefully it is not your DME that is the issue, on my e38, I mistakenly installed universal o2 sensors and shorted out some of my DME.....

I did disconnect the battery overnight hoping for a reset but no go.

I checked for continuity from the connector at the alt to pin 19 on the 52 pin connector and nothing. It looks like it would be the green wire from the 2 pin at the alt. I opened the ignition box on bank 2 and the green wire goes into a diode with current flow from the 2 pin connector into the diode and out to a green wire with white trace. There is no continuity through the diode so I went from the back side of the diode to pin 19 and still nothing. I checked the blue wire from the 2 pin connector to pin 19 and still nothing.

Since there was 12v at the plug in the beginning, I assume it had to be coming from the blue wire since the green has the diode (arrow pointing towards the plug) so current flow could only come from the plug side. Correct me if I am wrong on that. Surprised the diagram doesn't show the diode.

So no 12v at the plug anymore and no continuity from the plug to pin 19. hmmmnn.

Minor but possible positive.

I put all back together, still no start of course, but with the battery connected and the key in the on position I get continuity from the grn/wht wire on the back side of the diode to ground. That at least tells me something is still working in that circuit. This would mean the DME is putting that connection to ground when powered up. No change on the blue wire. So where was that 12v coming from on the blue wire? I think when I find that I will have found the problem.

Still no explanation for no continuity from the grn/wht to pin 19, so I assume that is not where it is going, at least not directly.

Do you know where X6038 is? I assume that is the blue wire?

Here is a picture of what looks like a diode on the grn/white wire.
The side where the alligator clip is the side that goes somewhere. The other side, a solid grn wire, goes to the plug.

No 12v on the grn/wht. Key on I get continuity from the grn/wht to ground with the neg clip on the grn/wht and the pos wire on the multimeter to ground. No continuity with with mulitmeter wires reversed. There is no continuity on the grn side of the diod.

I don't understand how 12v could be on the grn/wht when there is a diode in the line that would stop the 12v from getting to the plug. Do I misunderstand the diode symbol?
