if you have the bmw assist package and if your x5 has the module in the back already which sounds like you do

you can buy a Bluetooth module off ebay from a x3 or a 2005/6 x5 and its plug and play, the pairing code is on the sticker on the module

first 2 mins of ignition on is pairing mode

Not on my 2005.

I've never been able to get it to go to pairing mode. Ever.

Same module placed into my wife's 2002M3 would go into pairing mode, but not in the X5...
