2006 X5 4.4i broken engine block

This is just my luck. I notice a clunking noise coming from the from end a week or so ago. I stopped driving the car until I could get it into the shop. Today I had a chance to look at the car. What I found shocked me.

Turns out, 3 out of the 4 mounting holes on the passenger side motor mount snapped off my engine block. The bosses that the bolts thread in to completely sheared off the engine. What are the chances?

Has this happened to anyone? Is this something that has happened before? I'm feeling like right now. Where do I go from here? Looks like I need to purchase a new engine. Do you guys have any advise for me?

I've seen this on the E60 forums. Not sure the cause though. If it's your last shot, not sure if welding it up would work. Some pictures might help as I'm not exactly sure what you have to work with.

Could this be something that would be fixed by BMW? The car has 97k miles.

Sorry to hear that ...When i bought mine at 100k kil i went to BMW dealer to get historical maintenance and i was shock to see that at 60k kil the engine block engine crack ? BMW registered 40hrs of work plus parts (under warranty) i'm trying to find that copy for you.... Anyhow, i know that you just have bought the car, would it be possible that the crack engine was there when you bought it ? You should come back to the owner if it's the case ...

Perhaps that is why the PO sold the X. Unless there was a warranty with the car the new owner is SOL.

You might be able to weld it. It is hard to say without pictures.

I am going to make an assumption and say that the OP is from Venice, California. I would recommend posting up a few pictures of the problem area if you can...perhaps a second hand 4.4 might be a cheaper fix...

E53 motor mounts are very prone to failure. They are oil filled, and once the oil springs a leak, the mounts collapse. Usually somewhere north of 80,000 miles, especially if the vehicle is driven in an area with crappy roads, or by a heavy footed driver.

My guess is that a collapsed motor mount was ignored, the end result was undue stress to the mounting. I know on my 2002 4.4, a collapsed motor mount caused the bracket that bridges to the block to crack. Lucky for me, it was an inexpensive part. Unluckily, the A/C compressor had to be removed to change it.

Just curious, how does it typically work elsewhere?
If he was in Venice Italy, he'll be looking at an amphibious SAV. LOL

Here's some pictures of the block with the motor out. Has anyone ever seen this?

I'm wondering if someone worked on the car and left the motor mount arm loose.
