Trans fluid capacity question

Hey folks!

Just did a quick drain and fill on the 4.6. Bought 12 quarts since I read 2 flushes takes 6 quarts each times 2.

Well, just did the drain and when I went to fill it up, only 2.5 quarts was taken. HUH???? Procedure:

1: Loosen the fill plug. check
2: Open the drain plug and let it flow out. check
3: Plug the drain. check
4: Open the fill and started to pump trans fluid in. check
5: Fill started to pour out and plugged it right away. check
6: Started the X and ran though the gears... twice. check
7: Open the fill and added some more until it poured out. check

2.5 quarts total (probably a little less since I was still pumping a bit while it was pouring out.

So what am I missing? Thought each drain and fill in this procedure calls for 6 quarts.

Took it for a spin and she shifts a hell of a lot smoother but I still hear the BOV sound during each upshift albeit not as predominate (much more quiet).

What did I do wrong?

Thanks!!

Oh wait... am I suppose to add more fluid while the X is RUNNING??? If so, that might explain why I only got 2.5 quarts in.

yes?

Was step 7 done while car was still running and the transmission within the specified temperature range? If not, that's where the extra is missing

negative.

Gotcha! OK, I guess I can do that now since I took her for a spin and should be up to temp (read: HOT).

Thanks!!

Hot is bad. Find the DIY on Xoutpost. There is an allowable range. Not cold. Not hot.

Thanks for the feedback. Will position the X so tomorrow morning I can run and fill.

I'll also check how much fluid came out. It didn't seem very much to be honest. My oil container holds 10 quarts and I'm use to feeling about 5 quarts (the Bronco's 302 takes exactly 5 quarts of oil) and this is WAYYY less.

Stupid Question... When filling the vehicle, does the vehicle have to be level or does the transmission pan have to be level? My transmission pan isn't level when my vehicle is. I made the assumption that if the transmission wasn't level during the fill process I would end up with a undefiled transmission. Someone chime in.

Vehicle is to be level, not the transmission pan.
