It must be something in the water down there. A couple examples of categories would be summers, all seasons, winters, UHP, max performance, extreme performance, touring, ect. Size is a category? Not really in this case, unless you're suggesting that the front and rear tires of a staggered setup are in different categories.

That is cool that you guys have "unique" roads. The AZ800 is an UHP all season tire. In the same category (UHP A/S) is the Conti DWS. Lets for the sake of argument say that the DWS has 15% more lateral grip than the AZ800 on pavement. Chances are high it's going to be roughly a 15% difference across all types of pavement because of its compound and tread design. I don't understand what you aren't getting. As far as road camber, that needs to be corrected for in your alignment. Here we have cambered roads, chopped up roads, severely crowned roads, ect. If your city has crowned roads (like many small rural towns around this area have), your alignment is going to be corrected for it. Your tires are still going to behave the same relative to each other.

But hey, if you want to run shitty Federal tires, it's a free country. I am just glad you're an ocean away.

TiAgX5 and Joshdub ,you talk of the Premium brand, handling and safety matters in regards to cheaper tyres and you guys are both running 12 year old X5,s surely if handling, safety and all the rest you rave on about is so important to you shouldnt you be running a latest model vehicle with latest technology which would handle better and have far better safety features than a out of date 12 year old vehicle.I would put top of the line performance tyres on a new M3 but I am dam sure im not wasting my money putting high cost tyres on a older vehicle, when my wife will definetely not notice any difference in handling and im sure that my tyres which I always run at the correct pressure and replace when they are getting down in tread depth are a lot safer than at least 95% of other vehicles on the road .You need to be realistic guys.

News Flash! The suspension system of the E53 was not a "clean sheet" design, BMW designed the vehicle around the existing E39 hardware. This gives the "old" E53 a suspension that swings a geometry that most SUV can only dream about, even over a decade later.

Properly equipped & maintained, the E53 is a VERY safe vehicle.

I guess E53s are used in a different manner over there vs here. Last month saw a 2500 road trip (speeds up to 105 mph in heavy rain), a few runs to over 130 mph and hot lapping the Sebring track over 110 mph (with 5 people on board).

The fact that Atturo states the az800 is a UHP tire, yet sells sizes for the GT Mustang and Z28 Camaro with an "H" speed rating leaves me suspect of where their head is at.

Atturo Tires - AZ800

Most (non-Asian) manufacturers UHP tire lines carry a minimum "Z" speed rating (Vredesteins UHP line ALL carry a "speeds OVER 186" rating).

How a manufacturer can define a tire as UHP, then make sizes in the "H" speed rating defies logic.

This tire is the topic of a 12 page thread started around 5 yrs ago....

http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...uro-tires.html

Seems like Skier1 can continue bashing those who don't agree with cheap tires on E53s on that thread.

For a THIRD time, GLAD YOU GUYS FOUND AN INEXPENSIVE TIRE YOU LIKE, just don't try to convince others they need to follow your lead.

Makes for interesting reading and similar posts were made then. Curiously, Australian buyers seemed to be quite happy with these tyres in the above posts too.

I didn't want to start an argument, simply wanted opinions from those who had tried these tyres. From what I can gather, the majority of people who have fitted these tyres to their vehicles seem to be quite 'happy' with the general performance. In my case, I use the X for commuting 800 km's each week, on mostly rough country roads - not concrete interstates (and yes, I have lived in the US for several years, so am familiar with road there). I hope these tyres will suit my needs, from both a performance and cost perspective.
I have a 'performance' vehicle and it's fitted with 'performance' tyres to suit the driving style it demands (or the way I throw it around corners, so be more precise). The X is a commuter and so it is treated accordingly.
I would like to thank everyone for their informed opinions. It's made me happy with my purchase. The wheels with new tyres arrive this week and will be fitted soon. I will post my opinion on these tyres, once they've done say 2000 km's which will probably be within 2-3 weeks.

You guys over there aware that you can order thru TireRack (at US prices), with around a $200 shipping fee?

That's around $50 more per tire then our prices.

Camskill UK is around the same distance and ships worldwide, good prices too. May be worth looking into. I almost ordered my Vred UVs from Camskill, prior to locating Group A tire here in North America.

And don't forget exchange rate. And then you can throw in tyre disposal fee plus fitting charges...

And you get NO local support if you have a problem with the tyre, nor do you get any warranty (void outside USA, not honoured in Aus as it is not a locally distributed tyre).

Then you have the problem of what if you need one or two tyres in a hurry, and can't really wait the 2 to 3 weeks for these things to be delivered from the USA.

Should I go on?

The funny thing is, you guys rant on about how you are happy for people to make their own choices, but then deride the very choices that other people make if they are not the same as your own???

FWIW Tagx5, if I were running a vehicle at constant high speeds or high load situation, it might be a different choice of tyre. Then, I wouldn't run "normal" road tyres on the track either, but that's my choice. But when you have a speed limit of 110km/h nationally, most roads posted at 100km/h or less... You're comparing track work to travel on public roads. Are you deluded?

Oh, and FWIW - does everyone use their vehicles the same?

That guy who converted his X5 into a rock crawler - would you suggest HE use super high performance tyres?

What about me - mine is used as a towing vehicle - mainly under high weight loading (full load, towing a 2500kg caravan) and at comparatively moderate speeds (90km/h generally). It also spends a lot of time on gravel roads. Do you really think that your super high performance tyres are suitable for that usage? If so, you have obviously never driven on fast gravel, with high performance road tyres - it borders on dangerous.

No, the funny thing in all this is the fact that it could have ALL been avoided with a forum search.
