I don't find it surprising. Not that long ago it was illegal to root/jailbreak/unlock your phone. Big scary cars are much more of a public safety threat than phones.

That's a bit Orwellian isn't it?

Thankfully there are still enough DIY'ers here in Aus that it would be political suicide for any Gov't to try and introduce such a thing.

Going by their justification, this could extend to every other machinery and device since nearly everything is now heavily computerized and software driven. Of course, I don't see any of that happening. Never.

That is what companies already have tired/are doing. Only recently has it become legal to modify the software in your phone.

Isn't that what BMW is doing by having to code new parts in order for them to work? How many DIYers will buy a coder just to code a battery?
