E53 Vs E70 performance?

After driving the E70 for a while, I wonder what is the difference in performance between the 2 (both are 3.0i)

The E53 Auto is believed to be like 8.1 or 8.2 for 0-60? what about the E70, it's 7.8 maybe? i think this is too little of a difference knowing that both are virtually the same weight, while the E70 has 40 more horsepower, no?

Besides, another remark: the E70 with no sports package is soooo lean on the curves, the E53 with sport package was way stiffer and more at ease when entering a curve...

So as far as fun is concerned, the E53 was way more fun to drive, but boy is that E70 smooth or what?! it's silky smooth and much more refined...

So i had a feeling that the E53 is the young dynamic and brute guy, while the E70 is the wise poised and refined gentleman

Funny you started this. My local dealer had a "test drive any of our new or used vehicles and we'll give you a $25 gas card" promotion. I saw the flyer when I was getting my alignment and the girl at the service counter wanted to know what I was laughing at. So I asked her if I read it correctly - "I get to run the piss out of a newer car AND get $25 in gas for doing it?" She hooked me up with David in sales. Nice fellow. Let me have the keys to a 2012 X5 V8.

I have a 2008 535i and the 2004 X5. The new E70 is a blend of the two. I wish my E53 had some of the refinements that my 535 has. The E70 brings some of the interior niceties to the table. The gearbox is an 8-speed and the engine is a bit more potent than my 4.4.

This E70 had about 40,000km on the odometer and a price tag of around $55K. This one in particular had a lot of rattles and clunks. And the suspension was average. The ride in my E53 was stiffer, quieter (believe it or not, mine is solid and not a squeak or rattle), and with the 4.8 exhaust - mine sounded better too.

At the end of the day, with all the extra bells and whistles, 2 extra gears, more HP/torque, it wouldn't be enough to sway me away. I'd go for a really well sorted low mileage 4.8 before going for an E70. And then there's the price tag.......

Here are some shots comparing the two.

the e70 is a very nice truck especially the interior but I feel its not as sporty looking and aggressive as the e53 e53 still my favorite looking truck ever

Oh yes, i hear you about the quieter! My E70 has a terrible rattle! a lot of threads about the gate rattling, so i guess i'll have a long read to try to sort it out...

Thing is, you might go for an E70 for a change... just like you might buy a new shirt just for the fun of it... but logically speaking, it would be insane to pay 3 times the price of the E53 to get an E70

I do too think the e53 is the best looking but I'm only looking to sell mine because I need a 3rd row and e70 is probably my next best looking. I love the rear and side profile of the 2011+ e70's but not all that much of the front. the interior and performance is great. I was also looking at q7's and I love the front and back but the side profile looks terrible it looks more like a lifted wagon than a SUV. and the performance is that of a 3.0 e53 and the interior is on the older side compared to other models of the same year

I just realised almost everything I write has nothing to do with this thread

The E53 is a 5 speed. HP is 228 and TQ is 221. 0-62 is 8.3.
The E70 is a 6 speed. HP is 268 and TQ is 232. 0-60 is 8.1.

The difference from 0-62 is not as much as one would expect with the advantage of the 6 speed transmission and the increases in HP/TQ. There are a number of factors that could be the cause. The E70 is about 200 lbs heavier. There could be a greater loss of HP/TQ from the crank to the wheels. It could be that the ratio of first and second gears are the same as the E53 that wouldn't contribute to increase in 0-62 time. The 6th. gear may be a road gear to improve highway mileage. It could be that the height of the tires from ground to top of tire is a greater diameter.

HP and TQ numbers may be a little off depending on the source but the end result is that the E53 is two tenths faster to 62mph. Since the difference is not all that much, my choice would be based on condition, mileage, history and PPI findings (excluding price).

Good insight redliner. So bmw research and development was geared toward better efficiency that makes the car more "at ease" rather than faster, which perfectly makes sense...
