Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
BMW E53 X5 N62 4.8L - 54107227894 - Panoramic Roof Repair Kit - ES#2145031

That kit is cheaper and I believe mostly for the rear glass.

BMW E53 X5 N62 4.8L - 54137118849 - Sunroof Cable Repair - ES#157541

This kit is more expensive and I believe addresses the front glass. The seal itself around the glass has been updated too

I recently purchased some roof bars from a seller who upgraded his X5 to an E70 model. I asked if these would clash with the pano roof and he assured me they wouldn't (which they don't). We started talking about the pano roof and he said that on his former vehicle it was nothing but a pain in the a**. He mentioned that in his case, he didn't open it often enough (once a year), so the mechanisms seized and this was the cause of his dramas. He suggested to open the pano roof on a regular basis to keep everything working as it should. Thankfully, I don't have any problems with mine (touch wood) and it opens and closes faultlessly. I will continue to open/close on a regular basis to ensure it's working as it should...

You know..... I was doing the same thing. I'd open it fairly often, but I was pretty much unaware of the tilt function. I knew it existed but didn't really realize you could push the button *in* to activate it.

When the sunroof initialization procedure activated - it ran the thing through all of the functions. When the tilt function activated something went *pop* and both pieces of glass were in tilt-mode. The build-up of crud on the rear glass seal let me know it hadn't been activated in some-time.

When I tried to close it, the front (tilted) glass would close, but would then return to its open position, the rear didn't do anything and the sunroof "program" would abend.

If I re-run the initialization procedure I'll end up with tilted-glass. I'll have a front-section that won't close (it tries) and a back-section that cannot be manually closed until I re-run the initialization procedure one more time - then I can manually push the ramps back. Before this they are under a lot of tension and the ramps cannot be moved.

Right now I can open the roof a few inches at a time - but I gather it won't return to one-touch operations until I re-initialize it - which I can't.
