I went through this when I replaced the clutch, didn't know it so had to wait to get the correct fan.

The fan with the outer ring was the design used for diesel cars in Europe. The ring-less ("normal") fans were used here in N America. After many of those failed because they "exploded" when getting in touch with the shroud and some were cutting coolant hoses, some were going through the hood, BMW applied the same design to the v8's, and it seems now to the i6.
So when the motor mounts fail and the fan will hit the shroud, there is at least some "give" from the round lip not catching like blades did.

I too replaced the clutch fan with an electric one with a controller to set the temperature the fan comes on. I have it set so that it comes on just before the electric fan in the front of the radiator engages. I have it wired so the fan comes on after the key has been removed as long as the radiator temperature continues to exceed the controller setting. Have had it in place, I'm guessing, almost two years. I had to replace the controller last week because it fried but that is the only issue I have had.

Doru is correct, my 3.0 d has a seven bladed fan with a ring. updated versions for all cars have the ring. I'm looking at updating my car to the 11 blade version.

@ civdiv99, do you notice any difference in terms of temp gauge (more likely running A/C in town)? Your signature doesn't show year or engine type, so I'd be curious to know.

Well, my engine stays right at 194~196 under all conditions.

You can search my posts for details, but a couple of years ago I designed and built a circuit to control the factory thermostat and run the temp where I want it.

I am not a "fan" (sorry, had to do it) of the factory allowing the engine to run at 228 degrees (or more) under light cruise only to try to pull the operating temp done under 200 when under a sustained load, among other conditions.

I think it's pretty cool they have the ability to control the opening electronically, and the engine management system used on the early V8s isn't overly complicated, so yeah, I altered the parameters. Since the coolant pressure is a factor of temp, I like trimming that 30 degrees off the top.

If you do some reading, you'll note the electronic thermostat is designed to pull the engine below 190 if necessary (although I never saw that in real conditions).

More to your point - the original setup easily maintained the 194 I adjusted the thermostat to maintain. I like this design as piece of mind, having also read about fan destruction.

It looks like they re-designed it to not demolish everything in its path when it breaks off in a year or two. You know, with our wonderful cooling systems and all...

He emailed me in March, which is my absolute busiest time of year for work, and I let it slip and didn't reply. He mentioned the impact to his job when price of oil tanked, and hadn't heard from him. I'll email him again. Thx.
