2000 X5 heater control module replacing

My module was working on and off, already changed out the final stage relay and no improvident. it was recommended that I replace the heater control module. Seeing how a new one was almost $700.00 i opted to buy a hopefully good working used module. Mine is a 12 pin and does not have the MAX settings. That said does this need to be coded to the car now ? I read when I u tubed replacing it that it might need to be programmed ??
