oil

to Scotie:

That's always good to know, next time, no problem I will get the BP oil (I am sure any auto store in the US will carry it right?). As a matter of fact last night, I participated in a focus group for motorcycle oils.

Just to follow up, it appears as someone mentioned above that Castrol is again offering 0w-30 Syntec in a LL-01 approved oil. If you want to use the castrol it is very important that you look at the bottle as there are two different Castrol 0w-30 Syntec oils floating around a good one and a not so good one. The one you want will say on it BMW LL-01 as well as having Mercedes 229.3 and 229.5 approval. The bottle will also say on the back (in little writing) made in or imported from Germany.

Mobil 1 0w-40, Mobil 1 5w-40 Truck and SUV (not labled as approved by meets the specs), and German Castrol Syntec 0w-30 (see above). If you are changing every 7500 miles the BMW labled synthetic is also just fine and often cheaper.

I use Mobil 1 0w-40 most of the time, I am currently using the 5w-40 T&SUV in one car and may use it more. I may also give a run of the German Castrol a try but lean towards Mobil 1.

wow I didn't know so many people were interested in engine oil. Now I speak for the UK as you know BP Visco/Castrol/Mobile are all made by BP.

The data sheet below is for BP Visco 7000 however I could post up all data sheets for all grades like Castrol Longlife II or III and I can assure you they all have the same spec. Now this one quotes VW but I could show you ones quoting BMW or Volvo and they all have the same spec. Are you getting the picture???? Now it could be complety different for the states but I just don't think so some how do you???

Applications

BP Visco 7000 Longlife II fulfills the new VOLKSWAGEN LongLife concept, providing a new fuel saving, high durability engine oil. It is a SAE 0W-30 product with lowered high temperature viscosity (HTHS 3,0), meeting the special high requirements of extended service interval. BP Visco 7000 Longlife II unites the requirements of VOLKSWAGEN standards 503 00, 506 00 and 506 01, which could be covered in the past only with two separate products. BP Visco 7000 Longlife II can be used in all WIV vehicles with exception of AUDI S3, RS4, AUDI TT with 225 HP, and "w"-engines. It should not be used where VW 505 01 or 503 01 are required.

Features / Benefits

BP Visco 7000 Longlife II provides proven fuel economy, keeps the engines clean and protects reliably against wear - even when operating under arduous conditions for extended periods. The LongLife II technology links performance with environmental responsibility, via reduced phosphorus content and almost zero chlorine. Advantages:
- recommended for Volkswagen/Audi Longlife extended service interval.
- continuous protection of the engines over extended service interval,
- excellent stability for durable, high performance over long stress periods,
- reduced high temperature viscosity for high fuel savings under all driving conditions,
- new Diesel technology meeting the increased requirements of the DI diesel engines, - environmental benefits through reduced emissions due to the fuel economy.

Sorry but these specs are far different than what BMW and Mercedes require. This is an oil that is designed specifically for the new VW and Audi Motors that are designed around Low HTHS oils by the use of roller tappets and other items. Notice how it excludes VW's that need 503.1 oils (which are closer to BMW LL and Mercedes 229 specs). This oil has an HTHS of 3.0, far below the requirement of BMW and Mercedes of 3.5. It is also a very light oil at a CST of 9.7 at 100c, putting it at a borderline 20 weight. This oil is not ACEA A3 rated, it is an A5 oil

Also, note that the US and Europe get different oils. Castrol here is far different than Castrol Europe. Synthetic oils in Europe are all Group IV or Group V. That is why the German Castrol sold here is unique for Castrol. The only oil I am aware that is sold as a worldwide formula is Mobil 1 0w-40.
