In over 600k miles including Bimmers that I still own after nearly 30 years, I've used a lot of different oils.

The key is that I change it depending on a lot of things, the least of which is found in any book or set of dashboard lights- or Internet forum for that matter.

No blown engines yet!

That sucks. I pay about $35us for 6 liters. Sometimes it's on sale for even less.

BMW 5w-30, API SN. Holds up well to 24,000 km oil change intervals, which is a bit before the service lights would come on (up to 28,000 km). No oil consumption between those changes.

Rotella 5 40 in both x's and the xi. High mileage oil in the 545i.

Eventually I will only run high mileage oil in all of them. I think BMW seals could use all they help they can get.

I run Castrol 5W-30 October through May and my oil consumption averages a quart every 1500 miles.

I switch to the "M" 10W-60 during our hot Texas summer though when I'm towing (1300 pounds) and get about 2000 miles per quart then.

2004 325i 122,000 miles

Burning less oil does not mean lubrication has improved or doing so is a good practice. If the oil is out of BMW specs it is more likely to cause the opposite result. The temperature of the engine is controlled by the cooling system so spec oil will do fine.

I use Mobil 1 as well and my engine seems to love it. Have no plan on using other brands.

I run AMSOIL - Synthetic Oil, Motor and Engine Oil, Lubricants, Air Filters, Oil Filters and Greases AMSOIL 10W-40 year round. I choose it for its four ball wear test and TBN (Total Base Number) data

Details here

AMSOIL Premium Protection 10W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil

I've been running this grade of AMSOIL in my vehicles for over 25 years. In BMW engines since 2009. I will run it about 8,000 miles on a single MANN filter then change the filter and run up to another 8,000 miles. Sometimes this takes 2 years because I don't put but 6,000 miles/year on any of my BMW vehicles. I have not experienced any noticeable change in oil consumption. None of my owned vehicles consumes oil to any noticeable degree and AMSOIL did not change that.

In car brands/models where AMSOIL offers one of their oil filters, I have gotten as much as 25,000 miles per year on company owned vehicles and family members who purchased these vehicles have taken them to 200K miles with no internal engine issues while still using the AMSOIL at the extended drain intervals with their filters.

For my needs, I find the AMSOIL to be cost effective and reduces the overall number of oil changes that I need to do and it reduces the amount of waste oil that I put back into the waste stream.

I also run AMSOIL gear and transmission fluids in my BMWs, with the exception of the 335Xi E90 because that vehicle only has 50K miles on it and is still on the factory fluids.
