Should CCV be changed as regular maintenance?

I dont have any issues with the car or CCV but also like to change things before they cause a problem. Can they be just cleaned? (or not worth the time to remove it without replacement)?
I have 175k miles,original CCV, live in cold climate (normal driving is NOT short trips)

The plastic eventually will just become brittle and fall apart.

Kevin yes the plastic becomes brittle, there is some residue inside the valve etc.

No there is no replacement interval or spec, but honestly I think its more of an age related thing, even if you are taking long trips often.

I would say if its original, replace it, and all hoses and the dipstick guide tube with updated cold weather parts. Then you'll have another 10 years without worrying about it. Mine was very brittle and I changed it out last summer (11 years old) and that last winter I had it I had a few rough starts in the morning, so I think I got lucky and probably should have done it the year prior. Been great ever since replacement.

On an m54... replace the CCV and associated hoses every 100k - 120k. No later. Not worth the failure headaches that can occur. BTW, water pump, expansion tank, idler, and tensioner pulleys are also a good idea at around 100,000 miles if you depend on the vehicle to be as reliable as possible.

Edit: In fact depending on climate earlier as Trader suggested might be in order.

I would personally order the updated dipstick guide tube if it's in the budget. It's $150 from the dealer but it's an updated design (single wall)

I bought all my parts at dealer for $125. Believe it or not, dealer pricing is very competitive.
I wrote the detail below:

PS: My dipstick housing was flowing nicely, so I cleaned it with Brake Cleaner etc. and blow through it with compressed air. I saw no need to spend $150 for the upgraded tube.
If you:
- Use only synthetic oil
- Avoid short trips (less than 7 miles in summer and < 10 miles in winter)
- Change the oil every 5K or so

The dipstick tubing side channels are unlikely to be blocked.

I bought the updated design. I haven't put it in yet so I haven't seen how the original one is holding up, but I figured its worth the peace of mind.

When I bought the parts from the dealer, the Oil Separator of course came with the "updated design". Basically foam insulation around the Oil Separator (which I am not convinced is the solution but whatever...).

Well, during installation, it was virtually impossible to squeeze the Oil Separator in place (I did it with the manifold in place, only the OFH was out), so I ended up removing the insulation foam, then it was a breeze to slide the Oil Separator in place, then connected the vacuum tubes to the Oil Separator.

Whatever it is, I personally don't think the insulation helps much. What matter is: avoid short trips as much as possible.

original poster here - dummy me did the Oil filter housing last year not knowing I should have done the CCV at the same time.

I used to have a vintage Mercedes and a parts guy that would tell me "if your doing this - do this too....", without just trying to up-sale. I need a BMW parts place like that.
