Your X5, your budget. Have you also considered the consequences of failure in hot Houston summer (I lived in Atlanta, it is likely similar)? Don't know if you have young kids, drive any seniors around, wear a necktie to work, etc. -- all times and areas when you may want a functioning blower motor and controls.

IF you have controls that at least let you select temperature and air distribution (no guarantees), you can heat the car to a reasonable amount driving at highway speeds. You won't fog the windows with one person.

For summer (a friend had his failure on his FSH during a HOT summer), he still talks about the failure in summer (it was above 40 C / 100 F).

You are saving yourself $ on shop labor, saving time from dropping it off and picking it up from a shop (time is money) and some $ on the part (plenty of BMW dealers sell mail order and discount 20 to 25% in the US or you can check with BMW CCA Roundel vendors if you are a member). Isn't it work enough to "do it once, do it right" and have peace of mind?
