Steering box clunking - not the common column clunking

In the last month my 4.8is developed a play in the steering box ( 32136769268) on the driver side. I could feel something loose in the steering wheel when turning slow in some instances. I removed the tie rod boot and when moving the steering wheel left/right a can tell there is a play inside the box. At first I suspected the tie rods which I replaced last year but going behind the tie rod I feel the play. How hard is to replace it? Any adjustment or something? Did anybody try this? I have been on this forum for about 9 years but unless I missed it I don't remember seeing anyone replacing the steering gear.

I've seen early threads here of people talking about that, some have mentioned replacing the rack.

I havent checked the part numbers but yours will probably be the servotronic rack which is going to be more expensive.

Mine had quite a bit of play in the steering wheel when I first got it. I found it to be the first universal joint on the steering column just forward of the bulkhead. A quarter turn on the torque nut and its been golden ever since. Maybe worth checking if you've not already and before you spend big bucks.

The driver's side play in some instances can be corrected by tightening adjustment nut shown on attached pic. However from my experience little play is always there and not causing clunk in the steering. In most cases clunk caused by worn double joint. If you decide to try adjustment - mark existing position and turn nut in no more than 1/4 turn. This adjustment is not recommended since over-tightening may cause steering bind.
