A Mystery

Hello All, the saga continues with my truck(2001-4.4-120Kmiles). As I was installing new orings on tranny cooler the other day, slipped off jack and cracked the lower oil pan. Took that off to find what you see in image below.
So, I assumed I needed to proceed with replacing the chain rails. Started to tear into that. What I found was what looks like to me brand new rails/guides! THere is signs of wear on the pieces that were in sump. No wear on the guides on engine. There is evidence of someone being in the timing chain cases. To the point of removing the left side upper and I find the breather tube of the transfer case INSIDE the cover and rubbing on the vanos gear! I think I located my oil leak. But, I did have a ticking on the left side of the engine that remains a mystery. Now wondering if it is the vansos or???? You will see past evidence of the chains rubbing on the attached pictures. Note the wear on the VANOS solenoid from a loose chain at some time. At this point I am assuming it is from before the guides were done. I have no records of this work being done.
