Jay,
You are a damn good mechanic. For your transmission to needing replaced, It must have really died. What happened?

No Gregg my X5 4.6is is fine. This is a family members 2003 4.4 X5 that is in really good condition. The code that comes up is a torque converter excessive slip. He just wants to be prepared for the worse. His Tranny shifts fine except it gives a little bit of a grab when you slow down at the lights and eventually it throws the check engine light. Scan it at that point and it gives the torque converter excessive slip. He has maintained this X5 well over the years and would like to get another 5 -7 years out of it. The dealer price on the Tranny as you can imagine was out the roof so he would like to get a ZF but genuine remanufactured. |

One option, rather than replace the whole transmission, is to just replace the torque converter. The lock-up clutch friction plate may be worn to the extent that the control system is unable to limit the speed difference across the clutch (to 3%) in ‘continuous slip’ mode.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Of course the downside of going this route is that if it does turn out to be the transmission at fault you’ll end up removing it from the vehicle twice. Phil |

Phil your quite right on just doing the converter. I was giving both scenarios where its just the converter and least expensive and trans replacement being most expensive. Trying to get a feel for how much can he can get the ZF remanufactured trans for aside from the dealer pricing. |

I've bought parts from Eriksson Industriesin CT (Eriksson Industries). Nice shop. I asked about whole tranny prices and the rep quickly offered a discount when I didn't bite. So... I would view the distributor prices as negotiable.
