No Start- Could really use some help
Hello, was driving my 2001 4.4 this morning, everything was fine. Stopped at a friends and had to finally set the clock. While doing that, I may have pushed some erroneous buttons on the computer due to missing pixels and not able to see what the words were. After setting the clock, the f'n car will not start! All lights, everything on, just wont' crank. Battery is fine. I thought I may have activated the immobilizer. But it doesn't ask me for the code when I turn the key on. I went and picked up the spare key, same results. The remotes work fine on the keys for locking, etc. I tried putting it in neutral, etc. Nothing. I did the emergency reset of disconnecting the battery, but no results. I have to leave town for the afternoon and have left the battery disconnected. I have looked online for solutions, have not found anything. Can anyone please help?? It is sitting in parking lot at my friends condo……..thankfully the 200K mile E39 is my workhorse and never lets me down.

I had the same and it was the IVS (I think I said it correctly) module in the main DME housing, its simple to change and costs $130 CAD

At $130 and 15 minutes work (as it is a known fault) changing the module is a whole lot easier than standing on your head trying to change the starter motor as this was the first part they put in the vehicle when it was built, LOL

If you are handy you can verify that the starter is receiving current when the key is turn to the start position. Current means that the starter is shot, no current means you have something else wrong.
As for the IVS being a known fault, why is it that when I tried to Google BMW IVS there is nothing about this being a known fault? The closest thing is EWS IV which is the security module that would have to be aligned with the DME if you need to replace it.

Thanks for replying guys. The starter is good, verified. There is something electrical/electronic not working. Trying to figure out where to start diagnosing. Going to car in an hour or so, hook battery back up and see if that cleared anything. Otherwise towing to local indy(who I question knows how to diagnose)tomorrow. Frustrating to say the least

Try running the PRNDL shifter through all the gears and then back into Park to see if the neutral switch may be stuck.

Also, make sure your brake lights are working, can't remember, but I think theres a brake interlock switch.
