Exactly!

Also, It's not quite reassembled yet. The bank 2 valve cover is fighting me. The stupid gasket keeps getting snagged and falling out. I finally gave up for the day after about the 20th attempt.

It's odd because I've installed the valve covers twice and never had any trouble. I glued the sumbiatch in with some RTV and let it dry overnight. That ought to do it!

Good News/Bad News Update

I got the engine put back together and (hallelujah) it's running MUCH better. I think I finally have the timing right.

But now I have a new problem. The Service Engine Soon light is on, with the following code:

INPA:

DIS/GT1:

My best guess right now is that I either have a bad solenoid (not likely because it's been fine up until now), or that I have the timing wheel on the camshaft misaligned slightly.

Maybe somebody can answer this question about DIS: I want to activate the solenoid to make sure it's working (and that the DME is communicating with it). But I can't find the function in DIS. I looked at all the function menus/screens and the closest I got was under Function Selection/Entire Vehicle/Drive/DME. I see a listing to activate the VANOS, but there isn't any function assigned to it. In other words, I can select VANOS from the list of actuators, but there isn't anything to click on to actually actuate it. What am I missing?

At the risk of sounding cocky and angering the car gods, I think I finally have my X5 4.6is timing sorted. Only took three tries! And, I think I know what I did wrong last time.

Anyone who's done this type of work on the M62 knows that when the crank is locked at TDC, the Bank 1 intake cam is under pressure from the valve springs and wants to rotate clockwise, advancing the timing. So you have to manually rotate the cam to the fully retarded position and hold it there when you align and tighten everything. I'm pretty sure that the last time I set the timing I forgot to retard the Bank 1 intake cam when I aligned the timing wheel. So, even though the cam itself was aligned okay, the timing wheel was advanced by a great many degrees.

The cam was out time a small amount and I probably could have let it be. But I went ahead and realigned it and then made sure to hold the cam in the fully retarded position while installing and aligning the timing wheel.

It seems to be running normally now, and is not throwing any more codes. So in a brazen act of hubris, i cleaned and put away my tools. I hope I don't regret that arrogant decision!

Congrats on getting it fix. Thanks for the final explanation. I'm sure it will help someone going through this at a later date.

Thank God. Way too many 4.6iS that are not well sorted engine wise, and they are already rare enough so every time an owner fixes something on them I am happy to hear it.

I haven't had a chance to really test drive it yet (just went around the block a couple of times), so let's not throw a ticker tape parade just yet.

I have some errands to run this afternoon and will [hopefully] be able to put a few real miles on it.

In an ironic twist of fate, I have to drive down to Orlando next month for my job. I bought this car sight unseen from a dealer in Orlando and shipped to me because (wait for it…) I didn't have time to drive down to Orlando. Hopefully it will be up to the challenge and will get there and back without a need to call AAA.

Question regarding your repair

Congrats on your endevour. I'm not trying to hijack you thread so I appologise if if comes across that way. I noticed in one of your earlier pictures you had removed the lower oil pan to check for broken parts. I may need to do that also on my 4.6. Did you have to lower the subframe or raise the engine to get you lower oil pan off? Is there an easier method?
