Good idea to replace anything else while doing oil filter housing gasket?
I'm going to replace a leaky oil filter housing gasket on our '05 3.0i. While I've got things apart, is there anything else I should do? Tensioners, belts, or other gaskets? Any other ideas? Thank for your thoughts! |

If you take the OFH out to do the gasket, you basically have all the parts removed to get to the CCV - I would do it, plus the hoses (cold weather version) and do the upgraded dipstick tube at the same time
Also, belts/tensioners/pulleys are right there, as well as cooling system/fan clutch - depending on your mileage and age of the parts you may want to look into them - if those parts are original on your '05 - I would be replacing all, as I am more worried about age of parts in a cold climate/salt belt state than the mileage on the car. Check your PS hoses for leaks as well (bottom of reservoir)

The VANOS Oil Supply Line is high on the list of things to consider. You absolutely should disconnect the VANOS line at both ends, which requires you replace the 4 copper washers (2 at each end). If you remove one end and force the line out of the way, it can break the seal in the crimped fittings at the other end and this will result in the line leaking. If you can twist the banjo bolt fittings where they are crimped to the hose, then you must replace the hose.

If you have more than 150,000 miles on the X, I would consider replacing the voltage regulator on the alternator. The brushes are on their last legs at that mileage.

At 115K, I did the following and wrote them up:
1. Partial Cooling overhaul: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...16k-miles.html 2. The OFH Gasket + CCV is done together. Just ignore the posts by "trader4", and your reading will be smooth: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...-overhaul.html PS: If you have more than 150K, then do a complete cooling overhaul.
