front wheel bearing replacement - got ideas?

I always thought it was weight transfer when you make turns or brake.

When you turn left (above 40 mph) you are loading the right side and unloading the left and you would hear the bearing roar if your RF was bad - opposite is if the RF bearing is bad and you take an off-ramp above 40mph or so it would get whisper quiet as there is less load on it.

When I did mine, only the RF was making noise, but I always recommend wheel bearings and suspension parts be done in pairs so I did both.

Wrapped this up a couple of weekends ago. Used loctite on the first bearing while I was pressing it in and it was stressing my 20-ton press. Had to put my full weight on the pump handle to get the bearing to seat. Loctite seems completely unnecessary. So, the second one I installed with waterproof grease to aid assembly and no loctite. Still took some serious force on the press. Can't imagine that bearing moving around, especially after the big snap ring is in place. Nice and quiet now.

Got distracted with some bad mission creep and POR-15'ed the dust shields, knuckles and hubs (black of course) and painted my calipers with POR-15 silver caliper paint.

If you Can Spin the wheel And Grab hold of the suspension Spring you should be
able to feel it rumble a little just my 2cent

Don’t have a BMW anymore, but that kit is what I used for the sizes and variety of discs and rings. I used the press and not the screw. Don’t think you will get more than 1-2 tons of force with that screw. I used a harbor freight 20 ton press. US$150 with a coupon. The price is good and the quality is “barely adequate”. Don’t know if they are in Canada.

I don't have a press (my garage is so stuffed already), and can generally get things done with screw-based things.

I don't know about that particular tool, but a quick google confirms that a 7/8" grade 8 bolt has an ultimate tensile strength of about 30 tons. So I would not be worried about the screw.

It was not enough. I had to beat on the bearing from the opposite side with a big hammer to get it moving.

My 20 Ton press jumped an inch when my front bearing finally started to move and it was at the point where I was at the end of force on the 20 ton pump. I'm suprised the neighbors didn't drop a dime on me for discharging a firearm. It was that loud but it did finally accept the fact it was coming out.
