For me I know 0.1mm (what it was at when I first ever looked at the setting) caused the misfires across the board and eventually threw the CEL. 0.3mm is what I had it at and it was doing the same. I set to 0.8mm with GT1 (only other option) and so far, a bit rough, but no CEL. I'll monitor over the next week at that setting, but check the readings with INPA. I'll try all the increments back down to 0.3mm and see if there is a sweet spot.

So many other things that love the cold. Wife got stuck in the X5 (couldn't get out the driver door), busted gas cap on my 535, fuel filler door iced shut, wipers were like 2x4's across the windshield. But at least no CEL on the X5 today......

N62 minimum valve lift

I was just thinking about this. Doesn't that minimum setting kick in after about a minute of first start? I don't think it's there initially.

I think I recall reading something about it using a different setting initially - then running that new "minimum" setting after a bit. That's why on first start you hear the engine change its "tune" and sort of "kick-down" after about a minute of running.

I wonder if what we're doing has any impact on that initial setting at all?

I've read enough about these levers being the source of the cold start misfires that I know it is it. I have the SIB about the levers and the batch of them that were bad. I don't believe mine were assessed properly when the covers were off, but for sure I'll be checking the numbers if it's ever opened up. The drop in idle note and smoothness is it going from open to closed loop on the engine management. The levers are in full swing from start.

This week will be good for testing. The truck sits more than 12h in -5C or lower temps. Even if 0.8mm works, I'll test all the settings.

Today, -4C and 0.8mm. Ran rough-ish, but normal for temps and age. I ran it around the block and after a few minutes when I exited the truck you could smell it was running rich. The warning of adjusting the levers indicated increased fuel consumption. I only ran for a few minutes though. I'll get it hotter later today and see how it does.

The correction to an engine miss should start with troubleshooting for out of 'spec' air, fuel or spark supply. And, other troubleshooting such as vacuum leaks, loss of compression etc.

Correcting a rough idle condition by adjusting anything to an out of spec setting is a band-aid and/or dangerous. It goes without saying that certainly holds true if it is experimenting rather than following a BMW procedure to remedy a cold miss.

Details from a BMW SIB detailing the lever issues. I had an indy look at my levers, but I'll check with the dealer to see if they would still honor this SIB. If yes, I'd be inclined to pull my covers and have a look. .

Several 4.4L engines have experienced this issue whether in a 5 or 6 series. Probably something that should have been detected early on and at least one SIB (service bulletin on it). Maybe due to running some length of time with the misadjusted valve/lifters you may have had additional damage hence more parts than usual. But again, several have had their top ends rebuilt. SIB here: SI B 11 02 05 Engine January 2006 Technical Service This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. B11 02 05 dated May 2005. designates changes to this revision SUBJECT N62 Engine - Rough Idle, Misfire Faults after Cold Start MODEL E53 (X5 4.4 i/4.8is); E60, E63/64, E65/66 with N62 from 06/04 up to 02/05 production SITUATION Customer may complain of erratic engine idle speed lasting for approximately 20 seconds after a cold start. Check Engine Soon light may be illuminated and misfire faults for various cylinders (e.g. FC 2742, 2743, 2744, 2745, 2746, 2748, 2749, 274E) may be stored in the DME. CAUSE Incorrect tolerances and geometry of Valvetronic intermediate levers are causing uneven cylinder filling during the transitional cold start period (60 seconds after the engine has been started) when the Valvetronic system is switching from the initial 6 mm to a minimum 0.3/0.8 mm valve lift. CORRECTION On a customer complaint basis, and after performing diagnostic procedure described below, replace the Valvetronic intermediate levers. PROCEDURE Perform basic engine diagnosis (compression, ignition, fuel pressure, etc) to rule out other potential causes. Allow the engine to cool down. Connect GT1/DIS loaded with CD 44.0, or higher, to a cold vehicle (coolant temperature below 30 deg C) and from the Function Selection select: "Service Functions", "Drive", "Engine management ME9", "Test runs" and then "Tolerance test, intermediate lever". Start the engine and follow-up the test plan. Observe rough running values when idle speed stabilizes. If values are in excess of +/- 2.5 accompanied with noticeable engine vibration (and sometimes Check Engine Soon flashing), then remove valve covers on both banks. Look for the intermediate lever production date (stamped on the lever, next to the smaller roller contacting the eccentric shaft). If the production date is in the range between "04 180" and "04 324" (e.g. day 324 of the year 2004), then the whole set of intermediate levers (16) has to be replaced. The same classification of levers must be used when ordering the intermediate levers (classification number is stamped below production date). There are 5 classifications of levers used in the N62 engine. Note: In an individual cylinder head, all levers must have the same classification, but two different classification of intermediate levers may be used in one engine (e.g. bank 1: classification 2, bank 2: classification 3). Important: The lower production range of the affected intermediate levers is only an approximation. It is possible that levers produced prior to "04 180" (but not earlier then "03 363") may have certain deviations in tolerances. For Valvetronic intermediate lever replacement procedure, refer to RA 11 37 012 (bank 1) and RA 11 37 014 (bank 2), found in BMW TIS. IMPORTANT: Improved intermediate levers are currently available from our Parts Department. In the event of a reproducible customer complaint proceed with the diagnostic and repair procedure. N62 minimum valve lift

Mine has passed the intermediate lever test on the two occasions I've ran it. I never COULD find that damn date stamp they speak of! I remember looking EVERYWHERE!

I had the covers off almost 2 years ago now. Not much fun mucking with those things. I know the valve covers had been off before my ownership starting at 73k. I saw evidence of the aluminum sheathing around a tube on the drivers side had some scars on it that most likely came during the removal of the cover. Maybe I got lucky and they were done by BMW for the PO?

My X5 has a production date of 3/2005. Maybe I have a different issue?

Sounds like the issue wouldn't appear on first start but when it makes the transition from .6 back down to the minimum number 30 seconds after start.

Awesome. You're at the 0.5mm setting still? No CEL and you're passing the test. Nice.

I'm on day 2. I've had no CEL and no terrible misfires. I also haven't monitored values. This is why I give myself a week at each setting .

Not exactly. I executed the tests twice over let's say.....the last year. It was warmer out and it always passed that test okay. Who knows what my problem is...

Whatever it is. It's related to a cold
weather start on a cold engine but it's not very consistent or predictable. It never does this in the summer but over the past few years has done it in the winter time only. Sometimes a couple times a week - sometimes every few weeks.

Yup. Still at .5mm (haven't messed with it since) and I've noticed that the one wonky cylinder #4 doesn't have an oddball smooth running value at that setting, but will have one at a lower lift number. Maybe I've got a lever which is more worn than the others? Maybe some crud on the intake valve?

I haven't driven the X this week at all though so no new data or observations to share.

I've had mine set at ~0.7mm form some time now. The weather has been really mild and not cold enough to really test it, but all throughout, no misfires. Today was -27C and the car sat overnight. I fired it up and no blinking or solid CEL. It really, really hated those temps, but onceI drove it and got it warmed up, it got over it .

I'll keep at this setting for a while longer and more cold temps before trying other settings.
